The Rug Company Limited is a private company headquartered in London, England.[1] It is a producer and retailer of handmade rugs, cushions and wall hangings, operating in the luxury segment of the global rug market.[2]

It was established in 1997 by husband and wife, Christopher and Suzanne Sharp. It operates 22 shops around the world, with six in the US and three in the UK.[1]

The company is known for its collaborations with famous designers including Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Diane von Furstenberg.[3]

The majority of sales are to interior designers, but the company also has an array of celebrity clients including Bill Gates, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, David Cameron and Sir Alex Ferguson.[1]

In 2015, the private equity firm Palamon Capital acquired a majority stake in the company from Christopher and Suzanne Sharp and former minority shareholder Piper.[4] James Seuss has been CEO since 2015.[5]

  • 2012 - A bespoke rug is made for the Queen's Jubilee barge[7]
  • 2015 - Palamon take a majority stake in the company[4]
  • 2015 - James Seuss takes over from Christopher Sharp as CEO[5]

Production[edit]

The rugs are made in Nepal, where the company employs 2,000 staff. Each rug takes an average of four months and 20 people to make.[1]

The Rug Company is a member of GoodWeave[8] , an organisation that works to ensure ethical production standards in the rug industry.
