The Treasure is a 1990 children's adventure film.

Three boys find an old map that sets them on a quest to seek out a legendary buried treasure. With the help of an old local fisherman, the boys compile clues that unravel a 30-year-old murder mystery and lead them closer to their prize. They quickly draw the attention of a bumbling crew of malicious treasure-hunters and a mysterious pickaxe-wielding "digger", all intent on capturing the treasure for themselves.[1]

Plot[edit]

David is set to enjoy his summer vacation on the beach of Emerald Cove with friends, but is surprised to learn that his cousin Jonathan is coming to stay for the summer. Tasked with entertaining his cousin, David takes Jonathan to explore an abandoned ship yard. At the shipyard they encounter David's friend Freddy. Together, the three boys find an old treasure map on one of the abandoned ships. They decide to show the map to Cap, an old trustworthy local fisherman, to see if he can tell them anything about it. Cap tells the boys about an old legend about lost treasure said to be buried deep inside the local ocean cliffs. Cap cannot recall any further details as he suffers from memory loss and does not remember the earlier years of his life.

While attempting to learn if the legend of the treasure is real, the boys are pursued by three criminals that want to steal the treasure for themselves.

The boys explore the local lighthouse on the cliffs to look for clues about the treasure. Years ago, the lighthouse keeper disappeared and is assumed to be dead. While inside the lighthouse, the boys are chased away by a mysterious cloaked digger that they find digging in the lighthouse basement using a pickaxe.

The boys return to the lighthouse the next day to continue searching for the treasure where they encounter the three criminals. David is captured while Jonathan and Freddy escape. Jonathan and Freddy race off to find Mr. Haley, the local shop keeper, so he can help them to rescue David. Mr. Haley races back to the lighthouse, but locks Jonathan and Freddy in the storage room of his store before leaving. In the storage room the boys uncover the digger's cloak and pickaxe. They deduce that Mr. Haley is the digger that chased them from the lighthouse. They also find a pocket watch that belonged to the lighthouse keeper, evidence that Mr. Haley murdered the lighthouse keeper years ago.

The boys break out of the storage room using the pickaxe. They return to the lighthouse to find David, who has escaped from Mr. Haley and the criminals. The boys overhear Mr. Haley argue with the criminals about who is the rightful owner of the treasure. In the passage way below the light house the boys reunite with Cap and together they find a treasure chest containing gold bells. While the boys and Cap attempt to escape with the treasure, the criminals catch them and steal the treasure for themselves. The criminals run out the front door of the lighthouse to be met by the police. With the Sheriff, the boys conclude that Cap is the original owner of the treasure. Cap regains his memory and the details about his identity. Cap reunites with his long lost wife with whom he shares his newfound fortune.
