The bourbon (beer)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Bourbon, communally known as Dodo, is a blond beer produced and marketed on the Island of Reunion by the Bourbon Breweries of the Heineken group : it is their first, best known and best-selling product. It was named after a Mauritius bird, a smiling dodo.

History :

The Bourbon beer recipe was developed with the help of a master brewer, Gérard Avanzini, by a man Stevenson - who founded the “Brasseries de Bourbon” in 1962.

The first Dodo made its appearance on June 9th, 1963. It was first marketed under the designation of Dodo Pils, in 75 cl bottles.

The drink was renamed “Bourbon Beer” in 1970, but this change was a failure, as customers kept on refering to Dodo Pils. The brewery decided to communicate on this name - yet unofficial - and highlight the friendly profile of the big bird on the label.

Moreover, this brightly colored advertising emblem very often appears today on the walls of the traditional small shops of the Island of Reunion together with the promotional slogan “La dodo lé la”, which means “The dodo is here” in Creole.

In the middle of the 2005’s, a museum to its glory - the House of Dodo beer - was opened in Saint-Denis by the producer.

Many painted advertisements showing pictures of the “Dodo” cover the walls in the Island of Reunion.
