From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Thomas Dane Gallery is a British contemporary art gallery, founded by Thomas Dane in 2004. It has two spaces in London and a third space in Naples, Italy.

History[edit]

Thomas Dane is the son of virologist Dr David Dane.[citation needed] He is a private art dealer who co-founded the publishing company Ridinghouse with Karsten Schubert and Charles Asprey in 1995.[1][citation needed]

The Thomas Dane gallery opened at 11 Duke Street St James’s, in April 2004, with an inaugural exhibition of Steve McQueen’s new works.[2][3] This was followed by exhibitions of artist Paul Pfeiffer and Michael Landy.[citation needed]

In 2011, the gallery doubled in size and opened a second space, on the same street at 3 Duke Street, St James’s, designed by David Kohn.[4] It opened with the exhibition ‘Painthing on the Möve: Albert Oehlen & Chicago Imagists’, which spanned across both sites.[5][citation needed]

Thomas Dane Gallery opened in Naples in January 2018, at the recently renovated 19th Century Casa Ruffo, in the Chiaia quarter.[6][7][8][9] In describing this unlikely choice of location before its opening, Dane told the Financial Times that “everything we try to [do] is artist-led, and artists absolutely love Naples. I wanted to offer them a different and interesting space, rather than just expanding".[10][11][12] The inaugural exhibition was called Mostra Inaugurale and featured works by Steve McQueen, Bruce Conner, Caragh Thuring, Catherine Opie, and Kelley Walker.[13] In 2018, it featured the first personal exhibition of Glenn Ligon in Italy.[14]

Represented artists[edit]

The gallery currently represents twenty-seven artists from 10 countries and collaborates with a number of artist-estates.[citation needed]

Related projects[edit]

Thomas Dane Gallery continues its involvement with Karsten Schubert and Ridinghouse Editions.[1][citation needed] In 2017, they co-published Cecily Brown, Shipwreck Drawings and Richard Flood: Notes from the Playground.[16][17][citation needed]

In 2011, Thomas Dane became a Trustee of Nottingham Contemporary.[18][citation needed]

In 2016, the Moving Image Fund was conceived by Thomas Dane Gallery and the Art Fund.[citation needed] It was established to give UK regional museums a grant to acquire contemporary film and video works for their collections.[19][20][citation needed]
