Tigers Childrens Motorcycle Display Team
The Tigers Childrens Motorcycle Display Team is a not for profit team of children aged 5-16, who give displays of motorcycle skills, acrobatic riding and motorcycle stunt riding. The team is based at Solent Airport (H.M.S Daedalus) which has been their home on and off for over 20 years.. The team donate a significant proportion of their income to children's charities. These have included Children in Need, Comic Relief, Make-a-Wish and many local children's charities. The charities each year are selected by the children themselves.
The team is completely parent run and was created in 1980 by parents who wanted their children to perform. It was one of only a few teams to survive after the activity being popular in the 1970's and 1980's. Originally the team trained in Bishop's Waltham, but they moved about in the years after. They found a new home at RNAS Lee-on-Solent (HMS Daedalus) in 1996. They trained there for many years before being forced to leave the airfield in 2006 due to new airfield owners restricting use. The Tigers finally returned to the Airfield after 4 years in 2010 after a hard fought campaign.
It has a maximum of 24 children aged 5-16 split into to groups known as the Juniors aged 5-8, and the Seniors aged 8-16. They only perform as a whole team. The team is run by a yearly elected parent committee, and it operates as an Unincorporated Association.
The Tigers have always worn red uniforms. Originally they were simple all red coveralls, but more recently the team have switched to a "race" type overall that has a black lower half with embroidered logo's on the back and leg. These are flame retardant. The helmets are black full face motocross style. The arena staff wear all black overalls with an embroidered logo on the back. These are also flame retardant.
The Junior team currently ride club owned Honda motorcycles consisting of 5 x CRF50's and 6 x CRF70's. The Senior team ride various motocross bikes that they own from 65cc to 125cc.
In the 39 year history, the Tigers have performed at such events as the MotoGP at Silverstone, The Queens Diamond Jubilee Family Festival at Hyde Park. They have also trained many times with the now disbanded Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team. In 20018 the Team started doing the "Tigers Roar". This is where the team perform at a selection of schools that team riders attend. It is done on one day during show season and the amount of schools covered varies due to logistics. During the day the team collect from the schools for charity. In 2018 and 2019 the charity chosen was Wave105 Cash for Kids.
In the Media
The Tigers have appeared in many newspapers and many times on TV including Why Don't You in the 80's, and in March 2019 the Tigers were featured on BBC1 when Mike Bushell went and trained with the Tigers.
