Tom Whelan (born 16 December 1995) is an English footballer who plays for Chesterfield FC. He was born in Liverpool, England.

Career[edit]

Whelan began his senior football career with Verwood FC in the 2014/15 Season [3]. Whelan plays primarily as a central midfielder however has the versatility to play in a more advanced or more defensive role.

In 2015, Whelan began playing for Poole Town FC where in his initial games despite his age was lauded as making a "significant contribution" despite being "only 19" by then-manager Tom Killick.[4]

Later that year Whelan found a more permanent home in the non league set-up when he joined Salisbury FC. Manager Steve Claridge held onto Whelan almost exclusively until 2019 (there was a brief hiatus as Whelan moved back closer to his roots in Liverpool and made an attempt to become involved in Professional Football). Upon Whelan's return to the club manager Steve Claridge said "He was with us since the start of our new club and had been one of our best players. He will take us to a new level[5].

In 2019 Whelan signed his first professional contract[1] with Yeovil Town FC where since joining he has enjoyed two loan spells. An initial one to Chippenham FC[6] followed by a second to Weymouth FC[7]. Prior to these two loan spells Whelan had already featured in fixtures for Yeovil Town FC; playing 8 fixtures [8] including a goal against Ebbsfleet United in a 3:1 victory [9]. During his short stint with Chippenham FC Whelan featured in the first round of 2019/20 edition of the FA Cup on behalf of his loan club. They were eliminated conclusively, losing the fixture 3 goals to nil with Whelan playing the full 90 minutes [10]

2020 saw Whelan make the permanent switch from Yeovil Town FC over to Weymouth FC for a short stint before being purchased for what was an undisclosed but reportedly small fee [11] by Chesterfield FC [12]. This marked James Rowe's third signing after his appointment and Whelan quickly established himself as an integral part of the squad; netting 5 times in 27 appearances and ending their season as the third top scorer despite playing as a midfielder[13]
