Tomato Fest

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Tomato Fest is an annual festival held in Jacksonville, Texas, which celebrates the city's history of producing and shipping tomatoes. The festival is held on the second Saturday each June, concluding a week of events leading up to the big day. Tomato Fest includes a farmers market, tomato eating contest, a talent competition, a salsa contest, and vendors.[1]

The Tomato Fest received international recognition in 2010, when Bob Blumer filmed an episode of Food Network's Glutton for Punishment during the festival.[2] Blumer and a team of volunteers spent the day creating the world's largest bowl of salsa. The feat was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records and still stands today. The resulting bowl of salsa weighed 2,672 pounds, which was then given away to spectators. The bowl in which the salsa was contained is included on a sign located at one of the city's entrances.

The first Tomato Fest was celebrated in 1934, and a print of the article publicizing the event was reprinted in the Jacksonville Daily Progress in June 2006.[3]

In 2020, Jacksonville's 36th Annual Tomato Fest was canceled due to COVID-19.[4][5]
