Transcend Media Group (TMG) is a Kenyan based, full-service integrated communications agency with its head offices in Nairobi, Kenya. By being an IMC, the agency works as a unified, coordinated effort to promote a brand concept through the use of multiple communications tools that ‘speak with a single voice.[1] Integrated marketing agencies have the capacity, resources and know-how to implement a range of different marketing strategies in one cohesive effort. Founding[edit]

TMG was founded by Tony Gatheca and Lai Muthoka, the current Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director respectively, in March 2009 with a vision of creating the best advertising agency in Africa. This was to be realized by tapping into the best talent pool available and deploying them to provide clients with tailor-made integrated marketing and communication solutions.

Operations[edit]

The agency has operations in Eastern Africa with a presence in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

It offers strategic direction and engages local partners to produce the desired marketing results in-market.

The agency has also carried out work in Zambia and Ivory Coast.

Guiding Principles[edit]

One of the agency’s guiding philosophies is: Receive it well, Do it well and Hand it over well: The overall result - Work that Works.

Another of the agency’s principles is to ‘listen and partner’ rather than ‘analyze and tell’.

Communications agencies have recognized the need to be proactive, reactive, inventive, derivative, commercial, artistic, egotistic, practical, effective and efficient, and above all believe in themselves and their ability to improve the lot of their clients.[3]

Big Break[edit]

In 2010, the company landed their first major account, Samsung the world’s largest information technology company, consumer electronics maker and chipmaker by revenue.[4]

The agency was responsible for Media Buying as well as developing and carrying out an Experiential Marketing Campaign for the Samsung Mobile Live (SML) launch for their then latest touch phone. The campaign targeted youth in campuses and malls through various activations countrywide.

Global Affiliations[edit]

McCann World Group

Since January 2014, TMG has been affiliated to McCann Worldgroup. McCann is part of the Interpublic Group (IPG), one of the world's largest advertising and marketing services conglomerates[5]

Global affiliations, such as the TMG-McCann partnership, provide the local agency with global strategies, advisories, and first-hand insights on new trends in the advertising spectrum.[6]

McCann Worldgroup was named Global Network of the Year 2017 at the 2018 New York Festival and the Effie Awards named McCann the Most Effective Creative Agency Network in 2018 in its annual Global Effectiveness Index.[7]

McCann is famed for developing “Fearless Girl” one of the most highly honored campaigns in the history of the Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity.[8]

Some of the companies the agency has handled locally through its affiliation with McCann include South African Tourism, Mastercard and Nestlé Foods.

MullenLowe Group

In 2016, TMG became affiliated to the MullenLowe Group, which is also part of the IPG group. Following this partnership, TMG, which also has affiliations with McCann Worldwide, will offer more variety of marketing and communication services to its clients.[9]

MullenLowe Group is a global creative boutique with a challenger approach delivered through this hyper bundled operating model. [10] It has 6,400 employees in 90 offices around the world and has previously been awarded the Most Effective Network Agency by Effectiveness Index Agency for five consecutive years.

Other Notable Events[edit]

2011: New partners join: John Kiarie (KJ) an award-winning Creative Director who previously worked for ScanGroup, and Michael Njeru, a businessman with businesses spanning oil and logistics services.

2011: Won the Kenya Power account through a competitive tender process and handled the account for 5 years until 2016.

2012: Won the Population Services Kenya account. Products such as Trust Condoms, Supanet LLNs and Femiplan range of contraceptives, Kitu ni Kukachora (Make a Plan) campaign for the youth and Be Self Sure campaign for HIV self-testing amongst others fall under PS Kenya.[11]

2013: Won the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) contract through a partnership with King James Group of South Africa. The agency’s task was to conduct a nationwide voter education campaign for Kenya’s first General Election under the new Constitution. In the election, there was 86% voter turnout and less than 2% spoilt votes cast. The election saw a record turnout of 85.9% of registered voters.[12]

2013: The agency moved to their current location and expanded operations.

2015: TMG won the Communications of Kenya account and rolled out the Kikao Kikuu regional consumer educational forums and set up stands at the Agricultural Show of Kenya in various counties.

2017: Through its Public Relations & Digital departments, the agency rolled out Niko Fiti, a CSR campaign for the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation. Niko Fiti aims to empower Persons with Disability to undertake their daily operations with minimal dependency, enabling them to have access to education and employment thus resulting in economic growth.[13]

2017: TMG organized the launch of William Grant & Sons' whiskey brand, Tullamore D.E.W, and had Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky ‘2016 Whiskey Brand Ambassador [14] and Global Brand Ambassador John Quinn officiate the occasion.

2017: Executive Creative Director John ‘KJ’ Kiarie won the Dagoretti South Jubilee Parliamentary primaries. [15] He resigned from his executive role in the company.

2017: Launched the 'Asante Kwa' campaign for MasterCard [16] in partnership with Nakumatt Supermarkets countrywide.

Corporate Social Responsibility Activities[edit]

TMG has, through the years, supported the Kenya Diabetes Management & Information Centre (DMI Centre). Activities that the agency has participated in include the Diabetes Golf Tournament as well Annual Diabetes Walks. By contributing to these activities, the DMI Centre continues to carry out its mandate of raising the profile of diabetes and non-communicable diseases in Kenya.[17]
