Turgen (in Kazakhstan. Almaty)

Turgen (ru. Тургень, kaz. Түрген, until 1921 - Mikhailovskoye) - a village in the Enbekshikazakh district of the Almaty region of Kazakhstan. The administrative center of the Turgen rural district. It is located at the foot of the Tien-Shan mountains. Turgen is located 12 km east of the city of Yesik and 60 km from Almaty. To the east of the village runs the Turgenka River, which flows into the Ili River. Well-known in Kazakhstan region of viticulture and winemaking.

History[edit]

In 1864, in the Turgen area, Russian settlers founded the Mikhailovskoye village. The construction of the village began with the construction of the Mikhailovsky Church. In 1921 the village was renamed Turgen.

Population[edit]

In 1999, the village population was 9,741 people (4,747 men and 4,994 women) . According to the 2009 census, there were 12,116 people living in the village (6004 men and 6112 women)

Turgen gorge[edit]

One of the most popular tourist routes in the Almaty region is the Turgen gorge, the Turgen waterfalls and along the route: ostrich farm, open-air museum «Алтын Адам»(«Golden man») and trout farm Turgen. Waterfalls: • «Medvezhii» waterfall is at an altitude of 1600 meters above sea level. Height of 27 meters. • The «Kairaksky» waterfall is located at an altitude of 1900 meters above sea level. The height is 50 meters.
