Andre Rebelo (better known by his online presence Typical Gamer; born March 23, 1992) is a Canadian gamer, YouTuber, and streamer best known for playing Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto V. Rebelo has been described as "one of the most prolific streamers in the world" by head of YouTube Gaming Ryan Watt.[3] Rebelo has collaborated with multiple celebrities such as Logic,[4] Kyrie Irving,[5] John Cho,[6] Megan Fox[6], and Steve Aoki.[6][7] He currently resides in Vancouver, Canada.

YouTube career[edit]

Rebelo registered a YouTube account under the name "Typical Gamer" on August 24, 2008, while YouTube was in an early stage and he was still a teenager.[8] His first videos included tips, tricks, and easter eggs from the game Red Dead Redemption.[9][10] He continued to play games throughout the years but found little viewership. In 2013, when YouTube Livestreaming was created[11], he started playing Grand Theft Auto V and became one of the pioneers of the streaming service. He continued on this path until he reached his next major break with the game Fortnite. He started playing Fortnite in 2017 but the major viewership came later. When Fortnite reached an large player count of 350 million players in the middle of 2020[12] and it combined with 2020 being the biggest and most successful year for YouTube Gaming, his viewership skyrocketed to an all-time high.[13] This prominenance and long-time relationship with YouTube allowed him to be one of the original tester's of YouTube's "Super Chat" feature, in which viewers can pay $1 to $500 to have their live message highlighted.[14] In a 90-minute stream testing this feature, Rebelo rounded up over $4,000.[15] This success contributed to Twitch creating their own similar feature known as "tipping".[16] On March 3, 2020, he registered a second YouTube account under the name "TG Plays" which focuses on Fortnite content.[17]

YouTube contract[edit]

On March 26, 2020, Rebelo announced that he signed an exclusive contract with YouTube Gaming to "secure his talent" from rival companies such as Twitch and Mixer, joining other creators such as PewDiePie, CouRage, LazarBeam, and Valkyrae.[8][18] During this announcement of the contract, Rebelo announced that he donated $10,000 of his own money to the charity Extra Life. This went towards helping the kids at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and any fundraising he does in the future will go to the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.[19]

On March 18, 2018, Rebelo won one of KEEMSTAR's exclusive "Friday Fortnite" tournaments for $10,000.[24] Later that year in October, he won a "Fortnite Fall Skirmish" tournament in which he won $65,000 dollars. Then in March 2019, Rebelo was invited to a real-life YouTuber paintball event known as "MrBeast's Apex Legends Tournament" in which his team of 3 won $100,000.[25] In May 2020, Rebelo was invited to the Call of Duty: Warzone tournament for the Call of Duty Endowment Charity.[26][27]
