U.S. launches campaign to erode support for Iran's leaders Some U.S. officials have revealed that the Trump administration has launched an offensive of speeches and online communications in order to torment unrest in Islamic Republic of Iran and pressurize the government to end its nuclear programme and its support for various resistant groups in various countries.[1][2] [3][4]

Background[edit]

Following the unilateral withdrawal of Donald Trump from JCPOA in violation of international nuclear agreement and UN resolution, a wide range of propaganda has been instituted against Islamic Republic of Iran by various current and former officials of United States government. Some of the officials in forefront are the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton. Pompeo on his social media posts and speeches appeals to Iranians, the Iranian diaspora and the global audience.[2][5]

Motives behind the campaign[edit]

Contradicting claims of U.S. officials[edit]

One will observe a lot of contradictory information from various claims of U.S officials. For example, In a May 21 speech in Washington, Pompeo claimed that the government in Iran refused to spend on their people funds freed by the nuclear weapons deal, rather it is diverted to various proxy wars and corruption. By contrast, in March testimony before a US Senate committee, the US Defense Intelligence Agency director, Robert Ashley, said social and economic expenditures remained Tehran’s near-term priority despite some spending on security forces.[2]

Iranian officials reactions[edit]

A senior Iranian official dismissed the campaign, saying that the US had led various propaganda against Islamic Republic of Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He spoke on condition of anonymity. “Their efforts will fail again,” the official said.[5][1] In another reaction by the President of Iran Hassan Rouhani, he warned his US counterpart, Mr Trump, not to threaten the Persian Gulf nation's oil exports, saying that war with Iran would be the "mother of all wars".[4] In continuation of his talk he said:"No one who really understands politics would say they will block Iran's oil exports, and we have many straits, the Strait of Hormuz is just one of those". Rouhani also asserted that:"We are the honest men who have throughout history guaranteed the safety of this region's waterways," he said. "Do not play with the lion's tail. It will bring regret."[4] In another recent reaction by Major General Qasem Soleimani:“You threaten us with an action that is ‘unprecedented’ in the world. This is cabaret-style rhetoric. Only a cabaret owner talks to the world this way.”[6][7][8] In continuation of his talk, he says: "What was it that you could do over the past 20 years but you didn’t? You came to Afghanistan with scores of tanks and personnel carriers and hundreds of advanced helicopters and committed crimes there. What the hell could you do between 2001 and 2018 with 110,000 troops? You are today begging Taliban for talks.”[6] In furtherance of his talk:“You arrogantly attacked Iraq with 160,000 troops and multiple times [military equipment] compared to what you used in Afghanistan, but what happened? Ask your then commander who was the person that he sent to me and asked ‘Is is possible for you to give us time [and] use your influence so that our soldiers would not be attacked by the Iraqi fighters in these few months until we exit this country?’ Have you forgotten that you provided adult diapers for your soldiers in tanks? Despite that you are currently threatening the great country of Iran? With what background do you threaten us?” The senior general also rounded up his talk as follow: "We are near you, where you can't even imagine. We are the nation of martyrdom, we are the nation of Imam Hossein, you better ask. Come; we are ready. We are the man of this arena. You know that this war would mean annihilation of all your means. You may begin the war, but it is us who will end it,”[6][9][10][11][12]
