History[edit]

In December 1981, the Design Center officially opened its doors under the name of the Galerie Design through a collaboration of several professors from l'École de Design de l'UQAM (Gérard Bochud, Alfred Halasa, Frédéric Metz, Gorges Frédéric Singer and that France Vanlaethem then director) and presents, for the occasion, her first exhibition Le Werkbund allemand, entre l’art et l’industrie.

A few months after its foundation, in April 1982, the « Galerie Design » adopted the name of Centre de création et de diffusion en design. The CCDD moved into the large exhibition hall on Sherbrooke Street in Montreal in October 1884 and was granted its official status by the UQAM Executive Committee in June 1985.

In September 1995, the Design Center was relocated to Sanguinet street in Montreal inside the design pavilion of UQAM which was designed by architect Dan Hanganu, where it has a 400m2 exhibition hall.
