UVM Integrative Health

The University of Vermont (UVM) Program of Integrative Health is a joint project of UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS), UVM Larner College of Medicine (COM), the UVM Medical Center (UVMMC) and the Laura Mann Center (LMC). The official Program in Integrative Health (PIH) was founded in 2004, and in 2006 the PIH joined other academic health centers in the nationally recognized Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (IMC). 2015 was the year in which all departments and academic centers agreed to create an Institute for Health and Healing that will include a new Certificate in Integrative Healthcare offered to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. In 2017 the new Certificate in Integrative Healthcare has been board approved and has been offered as a 1-year-program featuring introductory and advanced courses for a total of 15 credits.

History and Structure[edit]

The University of Vermont (UVM) Program of Integrative Health focuses on evidence-based integrative therapies by promoting research on patient outcomes in primary care, and tudying the impact of Integrative Therapies in the Health of Special Populations. Following the board approval of the new Certificate in Integrative Healthcare in 2017, the program offers a total of 23 courses in the fields of integrative, complementary, alternative health and medicine. Every student needs to complete 15 credits to graduate, starting from the three core courses:

  • Introduction to Integrative Health
  • Science and Evidence in Complementary Therapies
  • Human Health and the Environment

The program is the product of synergistic, interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration, and features international leading scientists and practitioners in the field of Integrative Medicine, including Patricia Prelock, Janet Kahn, Ge Wu, Cara Feldman Hunt, David Låg Tomasi, Stephen Leffler, Robert Davis, Christine Vatovec, Hendrika Maltby, and Yu-Jing Sun. The core faculty is divided into four subcommittees:

  • Clinical Care
  • Education
  • Research
  • Outreach

Besides PIH core faculties, the department also features multiple student and researcher opportunities such as the Laura Mann Integrative Health Care Lecture Series, the University of Vermont Medical Center Grand Rounds, and the Integrative Practitioner Forum with lectures and presentations by experts in the fields of Complementary Medicine such as Benjamin Kligler, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Richard Pickney, Michele Lash, Aviad Haramati, Peter Wayne, Rebecca Schwarz, Tim Harlan, David Rakel, Lori Knutson, and David Rosenthal.
