The 2018 incantation of the United Australia Party is a new party established by Clive Palmer who had been the principal member of the Palmer United Party (which had also been fleeting named United Australia Party) from 2013 to 2017 when it was deregistered. The party name harks back to the United Australia Party (1931-1945), a predecessor of today's Liberal Party of Australia.

History[edit]

On 23 February 2018, Clive Palmer announced that he would register the Palmer United Party again to contest seats at the next Federal election.[1] On 17 June 2018, he relaunched the party as the United Australia Party.[2]

On 22 February 2018, Clive Palmer launched the party's meme Facebook page named 'Palmy Army'. This page was quickly seen as controversial within the Australian media due to its alleged racist and anti-semitic humour.[3][4]

Senator Brian Burston had been elected as a member of Pauline Hanson's One Nation in July 2016. He left that party on 18 June 2018, and became a member of Palmer's United Australia Party the next day.[5][6]

The Australian Electoral Commission published a notice inviting objections to the application to register this party on 31 August 2018.[7]
