University Center of the Westfjörds
Located in the small town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjörds of Iceland, the University Centre of the Westfjörds (UW) was established in 2005 and began operations in January 2006. In co-operation with the University of Akureyri, UW offers interdisciplinary master´s level degrees in Coastal and Marine Management, Marine Innovation, and Coastal Communities and Regional Development as well as a variety of summer courses.
UW is also a distance learning center, serving over 100 distance learning students living throughout the Westfjörds region, providing access to higher education without the need to relocate far from home. The University Center provides distance learning students with facilities for teleconferencing, group work facilities and reading rooms.
Coastal and Marine Management Masters Degree
Students enrolled in the Coastal and Marine Management masters program graduate from the University of Akureyri with a Masters degree in Resource Management (MRM). The program is international, interdisciplinary, taught in modules, and the working language is English. All modules are open to participants from local and foreign universities, and the business community.
Coastal Communities and Regional Development Masters Degree
The masters program in Coastal Communities and Regional Development is an international, multidisciplinary program focused on the development of rural and remote areas, both in the past as well as in the future. Although the theoretical foundation of the program may be derived from a broad spectrum of geographic regions, it focuses mainly on coastal communities along the North Atlantic and the Arctic.
Marine Innovation Masters Degree
The master’s program in Marine Innovation provides individualized learning and research opportunities in cooperation with the Innovation Centre of Iceland and the University of Akureyri.
Although all master´s courses are taught in English, UW offers Icelandic courses to foreign students and local residents that are interested learning to speak and write Icelandic. These courses range from short introductory courses to longer two to three week courses.
The University Centre offers full service for field schools, travel courses, study tours and other travel study programs organized by universities and institutions both in Iceland and abroad, as well as tailor-made courses for domestic and overseas universities.
Affiliations
The University Centre is the largest organization in Ísafjörður’s Vestrahús building and is a leading agency in the co-operation among the Westfjords innovation cluster. The Centre is a member of international partnerships, for instance through the University of the Arctic, and has participated in projects of the Nordic Council and the European Union.The University Centre focuses on academic quality and follows the Bologna requirements for European universities in co-operation with its domestic and foreign partner universities.
