Upama (transl. The Simile) is a 2019 Indian Malayalam film directed by S.S. Jishnu Dev. Story and script are also written by film director and film is produced by Anil Babu, Amal Manohar and Nithin Noble.The story revolves around Appu, an orphan who is mentally challenged but closely attached to the mother nature. He lived in a village named Kaavumpuram, Which is surrounded by various mysterious tales.[1].

Second Unit Director is Rajesh Vadacode. Assistant Directors are Shiva Prasad, Praveen, Aravind. Art Direction is Preshanth Velayutham. Film was edited by S.S. Jishnu Dev. The centralized character Appu has acted by Sasikanthan. The film has an ensemble cast featuring Manasa Prabhu, Anas Rahim .J, Hari Krishnan .R.G, Ziya Celine, Sunil Kumar .T, Rajesh Arapurayil, Sahil Mikhdad, Nithin Noble, Prasath Divakaran in main roles. Plot[edit]

Appu is a mentally challenged person, who is living in a village named as Kaavumpuram. He is an orphan and strongly attached with mother nature. There is a certain kinds of mysteries around the village. Upama is a tale, that is happening with the arrival of a group of youngsters. There is a twist over the life of Appu and villagers after the entry of gang. The treasure hunting game is starting from that instant. The fate of villagers and Appu are leading to a mouse and cat play. Many kinds of incidents are happening continuous manner with the actions of each characters within this story. Nature is also playing a big role throughout the tale and river is acting as a twist element at a point, it is really the turning point of stream of incidents. The reality is hiding by the gang and they are just establishing their own agenda over the poor people. A few guys are only identifying the truth, but their own positive intentions are blocked by the threatening groups themselves. But the plan of nature is proving the greatness and strength of truth at the right time. At the same time, gang was under wrong track due to their negative intentions and they are not identifying the trap of fate. Poor village people are not identifying reality and drama is carrying out in front of them. The treasure hunt is leading to some kinds of horrible incidents and its impact is totally changing the conditions of village and life of people. Appu is leaded to another one phase of his life with the help and care of mother nature, but that poor guy is not identifying the truth behind it. He is moving ahead like an innocent child within the safe hands of mother nature.

Filming[edit]

The major parts of the film were filmed in Neyyattinkara, Aruvippuram and Kattakada [ Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India]. The river location is at the bank of Neyyar river.

Dubbing Credits[edit]

The narration of the film is done by Santhosh Sivadas and the character named as Ashwathy was dubbed by Reshma Ajithakumar[2][3].

Sound Track[edit]

The sound track for the film was composed by Nithin Noble. The lyrics sung are in Malayalam written by S.S. Jishnu Dev[4][5].

Legacy and Reception[edit]

Upama is a noncommercial film. Within the cast and crews, most of them are new faces. It is a debut film for Director of Film as well as Music Director in Malayalam Film Industry. As a dramatic film, it got positive reviews[6][7].
