Vítor Verdelho[edit]

Vítor Verdelho Vieira (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈvi.tuɾ vɨɾ.ˈdɐ.ʎu vi.ˈɐj.ɾɐ]; born March 9, 1966) is a Portuguese entrepreneur, business consultant, university lecturer and startup mentor.[1][2][3]

He is the current president of the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA); co-founder and shareholder of Algae for Future, a biotechnology company specializing in microalgae R&D and bioengineering; and co-founder and shareholder of Necton, a microalgae production company.[4][1][5]

Verdelho has a background in Physics graduating from the University of Porto in 1989. He established a strong management knowledge through more than a dozen specialized training courses in Portugal and abroad.[6][7]

Besides his involvement in the algae sector for more than 20 years, Verdelho has an experience developing and managing projects in multiple national and international contexts with activities that include the management of research projects, technology transfer and new business development.[8]

Algae Sector[edit]

In March 1989 at the School of Biotechnology in Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Verdelho started his first company Necton, a marine biotechnology company specialized in the production and sale of traditional sea salt and fleur de sel, as well as the production of microalgae for aquaculture and cosmetics.[7]

He also co-founded the award-winning Portuguese biotechnology company Algae for Future where he is a shareholder.[7][9] The company has more than 10 years of experience in microalgae Research & Development and microalgae production (up to industrial scale).[5]

In 2016, Vítor Verdelho has been re-elected as the president of the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA), a non-profit organization based in Florence, Italy, that promotes mutual interchange and cooperation in the field of biomass production and use.[10] EABA establishes relationships with the main associations in the algae sector including the Algae Biomass Organization (ABO) and the International Society for Applied Phycology (ISAP) where Verdelho is a council member of the Executive Committee.[11][12][13]

Verdelho has been presenting work and participating in the mains algae biomass events worldwide including the Workshop on Sustainable Microalgae Biomass Production in Faro (2015), the 6th UK Algae Conference in Sheffield (2016) and 8th European Algae Industry Summit in Vienna (2018).[14][15][16]

Management[edit]

Verdelho manages and mentors several companies that he co-founded with partners in different sectors including; InnoPhage, Ltd, a company dedicated to exploring new technological platforms in the health field, focusing on the detection of resistant bacteria using bacteriophage; and Ecotlon, a company that is dedicated to reprocessing medical devices.[17][18][19][20]

Between 2000 and 2015, he has been involved in the management of SpinLogic, the entrepreneurship programme and business incubator from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto, where he followed and supported more than 150 startup projects in the fields of agro-food, environment, health sciences, creative industries and social business.[21][22][7]

Consulting[edit]

Vítor Verdelho developed consulting work in a wide range of sectors. He was a consultant for ADDICT, a non-profit association supporting the creative industries sector in Portugal.[23] Verdelho is a consultant for Social Economy at Ipsum Home, a non-profit organization aimed to help families improve their financial management practices.[24]

He also provides consulting for Marechal 1551, a business residence in Porto where he is an honorary partner.[25]

Teaching[edit]

Verdelho taught master’s degree courses in Entrepreneurship in the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto.[2]

He is currently a visiting professor at the Católica Porto Business School and the School of Arts at Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto, Portugal.[7]

Personal life[edit]

Vítor Verdelho is married to Glória, with whom he has two children, Leonor and Tomás.[26]

Awards and recognition[edit]

  • In 2017, Verdelho was nominated for the Algae Ambassador Readers’ Choice Award by the Algae Industry Magazine where he took second place.[27]
  • A4F, the company he co-founded won the National Environmental and Industrial Innovation Award from Indústria e Ambiente Magazine in 2009.[28]
  • Verdelho’s project Algafuel which was later transformed into the A4F company won the BES Innovation Prize for Renewable Energies in 2006.
