Vasudeva Varma (born 1969) is a professor at IIIT-Hyderabad1 since 2002. Prof. Varma has been the institute's Dean (Research) since 2012. He heads Information Retrieval and Extraction Lab (IREL), a part of Language Technologies Research Center (LTRC)2 and is founding head of Software Engineering Research Center (SERC).
Prof. Varma3 is the CEO of IIIT-H Foundation.4 The Foundation manages IIIT-H’s Intellectual Property and Technology Transfers. He co-founded Veooz Labs, currently known as NewsPlus, a social signal based news discovery and aggregation start-up.
Education[edit]
Vasudeva Varma earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and Computer Programming in 1988 from Mumbai University (from Chowgule College in Margao, Goa) and Masters Degree in Computer Applications from Goa University in 1991. This was followed by a Ph.D in Computer and Information Sciences, University of Hyderabad in 1996.
Career[edit]
Prof Varma has been visting professor at Language Technologies Institute, CMU, Pittsburgh, USA (Summer 2010); UBO, Bretagne, France(Summer 2009) and UPV, Valencia, Spain (Summer 2007).
In 2008 Prof Varma co-founded SETU Software Systems Pvt Ltd, a technology start-up along with Dr. Prasad Pingali (Vasu’s first PhD student) which is focused on solving information access problems using unstructured data analytics.
Vasudeva Varma worked in the USA between 1996 and 2001, initially in New York City as a consultant to Citicorp and MuzeInc and as an early employee of InfoDream in Santa Clara, CA. He was a project Engineer at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) from 1991 - 1993 with Prof. Rajeev Sangal during which he worked on building computational models for interpreting Metaphorical language.

- In 2007 Prof Varma received Research Faculty Award by AOL Labs.
