Vernensky Observatory
Building of Vernensky Observatory Building of the Vernensky Observatory(in Russian: Верненская Обсерватория) is the building located in the center of Almaty. Built in 1915 ,in the Verniy village, in the art-modern style of the 20th century by the architect: I.Ponomarev. Building was designed according to a standard design developed by the Pulkova Geophysical Observatory.
Location: In the center of Almaty, on Seifulina Avenue(Seifulina. 197a), between Abay Avenue & Satpayev Street, on a small elevation.
History: The building was the first in the region meteorological staion.
- From 1918 to 1921 was the headquarters of the Red Army.
- In 1932, station received the Status of the Main Geophysical Observatory and was equipped with new weather and upper-air instruments. Also was the main meteorological station in Kazakhstan. Constraction of Veterinary Institute was began that year.
- During the Great Patriotic War the building housed the sector of astronomy and physics of the Kazakh Branch of the Academy of the Sciences of the USSR
- In the 1950s - 1960s, in the era of the first satellites of the earth and spacecraft, Almaty residents chose the observatory as an observation point and meeting place for lovers of astronomy and scientific discussions
- Recent decades. the Museum of Hydrometeorolgy of the KazHydroMetCenter was located here, then a representative office of the Environmental Protectioin Department of the Almaty regionhip
