Vibe Avenue is a Canadian company, based in Montreal, specialized in music composition and sound design for visual media and was founded in 2013 by Matheiu Lavoie and FX Dupas.[1] Notable games the studio has worked on in the past include Stories: The Path of Destinies, Livelock (video game) and Ultimate Chicken Horse. They wrote and performed the music and sound effects[2][3] for those games and implemented them by using Audiokinetic Wwise.[4] They are mostly working with independant game developers, like Spearhead Games, Tuque Games, Double Stallion, Sauropaud Studio[5] and others.[6][7]

Concerts and live-To-Concert Experience[edit]

In april 2017 three game titles composed by the audio studio including Stories:The Path of Destinies, Ultimate Chicken Horse and Leap of Fate were played live in Quebec city in the Odyssée musicale du jeu vidéo.[8]

In September of 2017, Vibe Avenue's music was performed by Montréal’s Orchestre Métropolitain in the Symphonie du jeu vidéo de Montréal (the Montréal Videogame symphony), a multi-media concert presented in collaboration with Alliance numérique.[9]

On August 23rd, 2018 the two founders realized their first ever live-to-game concert in Germany, featuring live gameplay accompanied by a live-arrangement and an orchestra during the Soundtrack_Cologne Festival. The concert was held in the Filmforum Cologne in front of roughly 200 people and was the first of its kind for the studio.[10]

The concert was performed together with the gRoBA orchestra and conductor Rodrigo Lopez Klingenfuss, playing an altered version of the original score for the game, to fit their arrangement. In addition, the two co-founders Mathieu Lavoie and FX Dupas were supporting with flutes and synthesizer. The game was played by Sebastian Foerster. In the game, there was a genuine path chosen which the gamer had to follow for the orchestra to play dynamically too. For example, changing between an exploration and combat themed melody. this was possible due to a dynamic score, that was adaptable to various situations in the game.[11]

When asked about the concert afterwards, Lavoie said: (...) "I think this is for the history books, it's kind of like you know, in a hundred years from now, when they'll be talking about the video game music history and how it evolved from being an art attached to machines to be an art of public performance, this is one of the marking moments in history."[12] The German press reception was mostly positive, with the WDR praising especially its more experimental aspects of the music[13], and the terzwerk blog saying it works as both, music as an ambassador for music and music as an ambassador for games.[14]

Prizes & Awards[edit]

In July 2014, the audio studio won the “Best Game Audio” award at Casual Connect USA in San Francisco for the game Big Action Mega Fight by Double Stallion Games.[15]
