Vilakku

Vilakku - means lamp in [Tamil] and [Malayalam] also referred to as puja lamps. This signifies welcoming of Goddess [Laxmi]. According to Hindu culture it is important to light Vilakku during the dawn and at dusk. There are different types of Vilakku namely Kuthu Vilakku, Annapakshi Vilakku, Thoondamani, Kamakshi Vilakku, Vastu Vilakku etc. Karthika deepam, which is very important in Karthika masam according to Hindu calendar, is Very powerful for spirtuality life and health.

There are slokas and mantras which are to be said during the lighting of the lamp / deepam. deepam jyoti parabrahma, deepam sarva tamopaham, deepena sadhyathe sarvam, sandhyaa deepam namostute!

Meaning: This light is equal to God, makes all our wishes come true. The light that removes darkness from our lives and enhances our wisdom and knowledge, we salute to such light.

Maharashtrian culture too consider this as act of prosperity.
