Viva La Romance (Chinese: 妻子的浪漫旅行; pinyin: qīzǐdelàngmànlǚxíng) is a new Chinese reality show broadcast on Mango TV.[1] The show features four wives who travel to romantic destinations together. Meanwhile, their husbands watch the video of their wives’ trip and discuss marriage.[2] The show is a component of the recent social engineering movement facilitated by the Party encouraging young couples to procreate pending a demographic crisis precipitated by the one-child policy.[3] Explicitly, the show aims to aid couples in reexamining their marriage during periods of separation.[4] Entertainers and audiences search for the secret to happiness from marriage together.[5]
Format[edit]
Viva La Romance is a healing and observation television show.[6] “Healing” means that it is beneficial to solve problems in marriage. “Observation” is what four husbands do in the show.
Four celebrity couples participated in Season 1. Four wives escaped from family and relaxed themselves by travelling, while their husbands sit in the studio to observe their trip.[7] The innovation is that the husband and wife are separated. This manner allows couples to "travel" and " release emotion " respectively. Although the husband and wife are familiar with each other, wives may present attitudes and behaviors completely different from what they did previously. This contrast is greatly reflective. [8]
