From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Western Piedmont Symphony is an American symphony orchestra located in Hickory, North Carolina. The orchestra is currently celebrating their 53rd season under the baton of conductor John Gordon Ross.

History[edit]

The Western Piedmont Symphony was first organized in 1964 by the founding music director and conductor, Albert Chafoo.[1] The orchestra was legally incorporated into the state of North Carolina on November 3, 1972.

Martin Bellar, the Western Piedmont Symphony’s second conductor, was responsible for founding the Western Piedmont Youth Symphony, a large orchestra comprised of kids aged through middle school and college.

Richard Hughey, the symphony’s third conductor, established the Western Piedmont String Quartet. He also conducted the Western Piedmont Symphony’s first Family Concerts during the 1988-89 season.

John Gordon Ross was selected as the fourth Music Director and Conductor in 1991. The 2017-2018 season will be his Maestro's 27th and final season with the Western Piedmont Symphony.[2]

In 2015 the orchestra was awarded The American Prize in orchestral performance[3] and in 2016 the Tesla Quartet, the orchestra's resident string quartet, was awarded second place at the Banff International String Quartet Competition.[4]
