From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Will Stone (b. 1966) is an English poet, essayist, translator from German and French and critic.[1] He was born in Epping, Essex in 1966 and now lives in Suffolk, regularly dividing his time between the UK and research trips to Europe, specifically Belgium and France where he has held a number of writing and translating residencies at places such as Seneffe and Antwerp, Belgium and Arles, France.[2] He has also held a number of Hawthornden Fellowships in the UK.[3]

Stone initially studied European Marketing and European Studies at the universities of Lyons and Hull respectively, before earning a B.ED in French from the University of Bristol in 1993. A period of two years followed in Paris (1993-1995) during which time Stone immersed himself in French poetry and life while supporting himself through a succession of jobs as a bookseller, translator and teacher of English as a foreign language.

Upon his return from Paris, Stone enrolled on the MA course in Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia, which put him into contact with the expatriate German writer W. G. Sebald who took a few seminars and lectures and who Stone got to know when Stone returned at a translator in residence for the British Centre of Literary Translation at the university in 2001, shortly before Sebald’s early death.[4] Stone’s first published translations into English were of the poems of French poet Gérard de Nerval in 1999 from the Menard Press.[5] There followed translations in poetry and prose from a range of Austrian, German, Belgian and French writers such as Georg Trakl, Rainer Maria Rilke, August Stramm, Emile Verhaeren, Georges Rodenbach, Stefan Zweig and Joseph Roth.[6]

Although Stone had, by the mid-2000s, already published a number of pamphlet selections of his own work, his own poetry debut came in 2007 when Salt Publishing brought out Glaciation which won the Glen Dimplex Prize in 2008.[7] There followed, in 2011, Drawing in Ash, also from Salt.[8] Stone’s third and most recent collection The Sleepwalkers was published in 2016 by Shearsman Books who has also reprinted Stone’s previous two collections in 2015.[9]

Stone continues to review for The Times Literary Supplement as well as contribute articles and art criticism to RA Magazine, Apollo and The London Magazine.[10] He also continues to publish poems, translations, and reviews in Modern Poetry in Translation, Agenda, Poetry Review, PN Review and Magma.[11]
