William H. Peck (Egyptologist)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

William H. Peck was born in Savannah, Georgia, educated at Ohio State University and Wayne State University, Detroit. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War where he was trained as a topographic surveyor but was later assigned as an illustrator in a unit that produced training manuals. After separation from the service he returned to Wayne State for graduate school in art and art history. This led him to employment at the Detroit Institute of Arts where he began his museum career as an educator and lecturer. He soon took on curatorial duties and began to develop his lifelong interest in ancient Egypt. After organizing a successful Egyptian exhibition he was invited to join an excavation at the site of Mendes in the eastern Nile Delta under the auspices of the Brooklyn Museum and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. This became the first of many seasons he spent working in Egypt as a scholar and excavator, first in the Delta and later in the Precinct of the goddess Mut, Karnak Temple complex in Luxor, a mission of the Brooklyn Museum. In addition to his museum and archaeological activities he has taught art history from time to time at art schools and universities and has lectured extensively in the U. S. and Canada. After retirement from museum work he has continued teaching, lecturing, research and writing. He has acted as a consultant and visiting curator to several museums including Detroit. His home for many years with his wife Elsie Holmes Peck has been in Detroit where they have witnessed the decline and the present revitalization of the city.
