Women Winemakers of California

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Women Winemakers of California is a non-profit educational project whose stated goal is to promote equity for women winemakers. It was established in 2011.

History[edit]

In 2011, Santa Clara University Professors Lucia Albino Gilbert[1] and John Carl Gilbert[2] decided to test the assumption in the winemaking industry that, despite the fact that winemaking has traditionally been considered a male-dominated field[3], women in the industry had already shattered the winemakers' "glass ceiling",[4][5] particularly in terms of representation in the total population of winemakers. The high visibility and successes of winemakers such as Zelma Long, Cathy Corison, and Heidi Barrett in the 1980s and 90s had helped to support this assumption.

Because California is one of the world’s largest major wine-producing areas[6] and is home to the University of California, Davis, a premiere university for wine making education,[7] Dr. Lucia Gilbert and Dr. John Gilbert felt that the study of the progress of women winemakers in the state was of particular interest. They developed a comprehensive database of the approximately 3200 wineries then operating in California, together with the name and gender of their lead or principal winemaker. Using this database, they documented that only 9.8% of the wineries in California had a lead winemaker who was a woman.[8][9][10][11] They also advocated for educational resources that could accurately reflect the presence of women winemakers in California and make women's career paths and contributions to the wine industry more visible.

Resources and Work[edit]

Women Winemakers of California provides current information on lead women winemakers in California, including the wineries for which she currently makes wines, and the locations for the wineries.[12] So far, profiles of over 300 lead women winemakers are featured on the site.[13]
