Biography[edit]

Xie Jin was born on March 5, 1982. Four generations of his Family have all devoted to quyi career, or traditional Chinese folk art forms. He is the son of Xie Tianshun (谢天顺), a noted xiangsheng performer, once in a duo with Ma Zhiming (马志明), the hier and son to xiangsheng master Ma Sanli (马三立). Xiejin's grandfather was Xie Shuyang (谢舒扬), a renowned sanxian master. Xie Jin's great grandfather was Xie Ruizhi (谢芮芝), known for establishing Xie School Story-telling, in which the performer plays a traditional Manchu style drum-song bajiaogu (Chinese: 八角鼓; pinyin: bā jiǎo gǔ) to to sanxian solo.[1]

Career[edit]

After graduation from a university, Xie Jin joined Deyunshe (德云社), a xiangsheng performing company that operates in China led by Guo Degang (郭德纲).[2] Pursuant to the traditional practice of xiangsheng, the late Wang Shichen (王世臣) became his mentor. As there are 8 teams currently under the company, Xie Jin (usually as the role of penggen) and Li Hedong (李鹤东) (usually as the role of dougen) are the leading duo therein.[3]

In the second half of 2018, Xie Jin and Li Hedong participated in Cross Talk, a xiangsheng show that was aired on Shanghai Dragon Television ranging from 11 August to 27 October. The newly formed duo (since 9 February, 2017) won the second place of the competition.

Repertoires[edit]

Xie Jin currently has performed a total of 138 xiangsheng works[4] since his debut on March 17, 2007.[5]

Here are just a few of them.

  • Opera Highlights (洪羊洞, or hong yang dong, content being the reverse of a tragedy of three heroes in Song Dynasty, excerpt from The Generals of the Yang Family. Delivered with the imitation of how a male Peking Opera singer sheng performs)
  • Bragging about Your Mansion (夸住宅, or kua zhu zhai, from which the cultural legacy of ancient architecture can be learned in a long tongue twister.)
  • Sir, Your Dish Menu (报菜名, or bao cai ming, in which a basic xiangsheng skill of long tongue twister is performed. Given the fact that the xiangsheng performers used to lead a low life before their underprivileged neighbourhood, the delicacies on the menu is a fantastic audio treat for all the audiences. Delivered in a long tongue twister.)
  • Heroes on Eight Folding Screens (八屏扇, or ba ping shan, where eight historical figures and their feats are properly told. Delivered in a long tongue twister.)
  • Weird Sutra Chanted for the Death (师傅经, or shi fu jing, in which the duo pretend to be the proper sutra chanting masters and they will unprofessionally deliver all kinds of amusing songs, opera highlights, and sutras).
