Sharma was the only female singer for YRF’s Qaidi Band, and received critical acclaim as the singing voice of Anya Singh’s character Bindiya Chadha.

Her work in Gujarati cinema, with hits like Mahuva (Suryansh) and Pankhi Re (Sharato Lagu), have made her a household name. Apart from her music career, Sharma is involved with the rescue and adoption of stray dogs and other animals. She also loves cooking, especially baking and if not music, she would have become a chef.

Early Life[edit]

Sharma was born in Mumbai to singer couple Geetanjali and Yashpal Sharma. After her father’s death when she was six years old, Sharma decided that she wanted to make music her career. She began training in Hindustani music, and made her public debut at the age of 12. That first performance helped her get overcome stage fright and also gave her a taste of singing in front of a live audience. She continued to perform at weddings and other public events, and later trained in Carnatic music under Alamelu Mani and Hindustani classical from Pandit Prabhakar Karekar.

Career[edit]

Sharma came to the attention of the masses in 2008, when she participated in Hero Honda SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2009. She was adjudged as the first runner up on the Indian reality TV singing competition show.

Sharma also participated in reality singing show IPL Rockstars (2010) on Colors, which was judged by Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher. She was the third runner up on the show.

Hindi Cinema[edit]

Hero Honda SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2009 introduced her to future mentors Pritam and Shankar Mahadevan.[3] After the show, Pritam signed her to sing Haan Main Jitni Martaba (credited as Yashita Yashpal) with KK in the 2010 Hindi comedy All the Best: Fun Begins. She also sang Eena Meena Myna Mo (credited as Yashita Yashpal), composed by the musical trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, for the movie for Zokkomon (2011). While the film did not do well commercially, Sharma feels lucky to have sung this number as it challenged her vocal abilities.[4]

She sang Ho Gayi Tun (credited as Yashita Yashpal), composed by Pritam, for the 2012 heist film Players. Sharma recorded this song in the middle of the night despite having a bad cold. She recorded Setting Song, composed by Lalit Pandit of Jatin-Lalit fame, with Sonu Nigam and Amit Kumar for the 2012 crime comedy Chaalis Chauraasi.[5]

Sharma has also sung Sayaani and Kundali for Pad Man (2018)[6] and Manmarziyaan (2018), respectively.

Gujarati Cinema[edit]

Sharma debuted in the Gujarati film industry in 2018, with two songs— Pankhi Re in Sharato Lagu,[7] and Mahuva in Suryansh.

Live Shows and Beyond[edit]

Sharma has often performed live with Pritam, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Amit Trivedi, and Benny Dayal and his band Funktuation.[8] [9]

She began composing and writing songs in 2015. As of December 2018, she performs with her own band. She is working on a debut EP, which is expected to drop in April 2019.[10] She says the music will be somewhere at the intersection of funk and pop.[11]

Sharma lives in Mumbai with her husband Chetan Roy and a rescue dog named Malli.[12]
