It is completely surrounded by natural geographical features, being bordered by the River Ely (Afon Elái) to the east, which flows the entire length of the estate, and a small forest to the west. It is also located at the confluence of the Afon Clun with the River Ely. On the other side of the River Ely, is the village of Pontyclun to the south-east and the small cul-de-sac of Pant Y Dderwen to the north-east.
Before Ynysddu was developed into a housing estate in the late 1990's, it was the site of Ynysddu Farm.
Access to Ynysddu it via a bridge over the River Ely, which branches off from the A4222 main road (Cowbridge Road). It is within close proximity to Y Pant School, being located opposite the housing estate.
