In campus life, he was secretary of Rotaract Club of Islamic University (2018-19), Unit council President of Islamic University Rover Scout Group (2019), Central Publicity Secretary of Consumer Youth Bangladesh (CYB).

He became involved in left-wing politics in his first year of university life. He is acting as the Vice President of Bangladesh Student Unity of Islamic University Branch. He is a favorite face of the students for leading in the realization of student rights.

Currently Akhtar working as the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Tarun Column Lekhok Forum (BTCLF). He is the founder president of Bangladesh Tarun Column Lekhok Forum (BTCLF) Islamic University branch. There are 17 branches of the organization in the public Universities of Bangladesh.
