Kevin Alexander White (born August 21, 1967) is an American statistician and mathematics educator. He is a professor of mathematics education at Texas State University, where he is the assistant chair of his department. His research interests include topics in statistics education, visualization of functions, middle school mathematics, and technology for teaching.[1]

Early Life[edit]
White was born in El Paso, Texas to Roger White, a historian for the United States Army Air Defense Artillery School, and Ursula White, a psychology professor at El Paso Community College. His father is from Ohio and his mother is from Germany. White's parents met in Germany while his father was stationed there as a soldier for the United States Army. After marrying, they moved to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas where they raised Alex and his older brother Padraic.
Education[edit]
Alexander attended Eastwood High School (Texas), where he met his lifelong friends John Linney and Joe Hirsch. Alex was active in his high school's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Following his graduation from high school, he enrolled in University of Texas at El Paso, where he majored in Chemistry and graduated in 1988.
Family[edit]
Alexander met Maria Alejandra Sorto while pursuing his master's degree at University of Texas at El Paso. They married in 1992. In 1996, White and his wife gave birth to their first daughter, Isabel Alejandra Sorto White (23). In 2004, they gave birth to their second daughter Sofia Anabel Sorto White (15). Isabel plans to pursue a career in mathematics education as a professor, like her father. Their family is very close; they enjoy traveling and watching musicals together.

Higher Education[edit]
White began a master's degree at Stanford University but later realized statistics was his true calling. He returned to University of Texas at El Paso to pursue a master's degree in Statistics, where he met his future wife, Maria Alejandra Sorto. They attended Michigan State University together, where Alexander graduated with a Ph.D. in Statistics. His dissertation was titled "Exponentiated gradient portfolios in continuous trading."
Professional Experience[edit]
In 1997, due to visa complications, Alex, his wife, and his newborn daughter Isabel had to move back to his wife's country of origin, Honduras. Here, Alex worked as a coordinator of computing and data analysis at the Unit for the Measurement of the Quality of Education, Honduras from 1997 to 1999. It was here that Alex became fluent in Spanish, and frequently describes this time living in Tegucigalpa, Honduras as being formative to his career.
The family then moved back to East Lansing, Michigan, where Alex worked as a visiting assistant professor for a few months at Michigan State University. Later, Alex found a full-time position at American University as an assistant professor of statistics from 2000 to 2005.
Following the birth of their second child, Sofia, the family moved to San Marcos, Texas, where they currently live. Alex and his wife started full-time positions as professors of mathematics education at Texas State University in the department of mathematics. They both received tenure in 2018. In 2019, Alex assumed the position of assistant chair of the mathematics department.
Hobbies[edit]
Outside of mathematics, Alex loves to cook, watch movies, and listen to music and the radio. Taking after his parents, Alex is a lifelong learner. He is an avid reader and lover of history and culture. In terms of media consumption, Alex turns to CNN, Slate, and NPR for news, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert for laughter, and the Graham Norton Show for comfort and happiness. Alex strives to be the best husband and father.
