Andrew James Lodge, MD, is an American heart surgeon specializing in pediatric and adult congenital heart surgery, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. With over 30 years in the medical field, he has performed thousands of life-saving heart procedures and contributed to surgical education, research, and humanitarian medical missions.

He spent nearly two decades at Duke University Medical Center, where he became a key figure in the treatment of complex congenital heart conditions. His career later expanded into heart and lung transplantation, and he currently serves as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Transplant Advocates and Paragonix Technologies in Dallas, Texas.

Early life and education

Lodge was born in Trenton, New Jersey and raised in Ewing Township, where both of his parents were teachers. He attended Ewing High School before enrolling at the University of Virginia, where he was accepted into the prestigious Echols Scholar Program.

At UVA, he pursued biological chemistry and completed his undergraduate thesis on peptide synthesis. In 1989, he graduated with High Distinction.

Following strong recommendations from his academic advisors, Lodge enrolled at Duke University School of Medicine. Duke’s unique medical curriculum condensed two years of basic science courses into one, followed by a second year of clinical rotations and a full year of independent research. During this research year, he worked in Dr. Ross Ungerleider’s laboratory, which solidified his interest in congenital heart surgery. He was particularly drawn to the field due to the complex cardiovascular physiology of pediatric patients and the technical challenges of congenital heart procedures.

In 1993, he earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Duke University School of Medicine.

Surgical training and fellowship

After medical school, Lodge was accepted into the general and cardiothoracic surgical residency program at Duke University Medical Center. At that time, Duke’s nine-year program included five years of general surgery training, two additional years of laboratory research, and two years of cardiothoracic surgery training.

After completing this program, he became board-certified in both general and thoracic surgery. He then pursued a one-year fellowship in congenital heart surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), training under Dr. Thomas Spray. By the end of this fellowship, he had completed a full decade of specialized training in congenital heart surgery.

Medical career

Lodge began his career as a congenital heart surgeon at Duke University Medical Center in 2003. His early work included both congenital heart surgery and developing expertise in heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices. As Duke’s congenital heart program expanded, he focused exclusively on treating children and adults with congenital heart disease.

In addition to his clinical work, he contributed to medical research, surgical education, and peer-reviewing articles for leading medical journals. When the American Board of Thoracic Surgery introduced specialty certification in congenital heart surgery, he obtained this distinction.

Leadership and awards

Lodge has held leadership positions in several major surgical associations, including the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association. He also played a key role in surgical education at Duke University.

In 2018, he was honored with the Duke University Presidential Award for his outstanding care of congenital heart patients. In 2019, he was appointed Medical Director of Quality and Safety for Children’s Surgery, overseeing quality improvement and patient safety initiatives for pediatric surgeries at Duke.

Humanitarian medical missions

One of the most fulfilling aspects of Lodge’s career has been his involvement in humanitarian surgical missions. He has participated in congenital heart surgery missions in Nicaragua, the Philippines, and Bolivia, providing life-saving procedures for children who would not otherwise have access to this care.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he was collaborating with partners to establish a pediatric cardiac surgery program in Panama. When global travel restrictions temporarily halted these efforts, he later resumed his humanitarian work, traveling to Iraq and Ecuador with cardiac surgery teams to perform charity congenital heart surgeries.

Transition to transplant Surgery

Over time, Lodge shifted his focus toward heart and lung transplantation. In November 2021, he transitioned into independent consulting, providing specialized expertise in congenital heart surgery and transplant medicine.

From June 2022 to December 2023, he worked with DonorLink, LLC, as well as Transplant Advocates LLC, where he contributed to advancements in organ preservation and transplantation techniques.

Since December 2023, he has been serving as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Transplant Advocates and Paragonix Technologies in Dallas, Texas. His current work focuses on improving organ preservation and transplantation outcomes through cutting-edge medical technology.

Personal Life

Lodge currently resides in Dallas, Texas. Outside of his medical career, he enjoys reading, spending time with his son, cooking, traveling, and outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, golf, walking, and biking.
