Battle for Dream Island (or simply BFDI for short, and also known by various alternate titles) is an American Flash animated web series created by twins Michael and Cary Huang on their Jacknjellify YouTube channel on New Year's Day of 2010. The series is produced by self-run Jacknjellify, LLC, with Frederator Studios participating in funding as of season 4.[1]
Plot[edit]
Set in a fictional universe, the series centers around hundreds of anthropomorphic everyday objects, each with their own personalities, living in a part of the world known as Goiky. When a mysterious speaker box known as the Announcer arrives from out of nowhere, only few are selected to join the competition and are divided into teams that battle in a competition to win a titular island of luxury known as Dream Island. Every episode contains a challenge to determine the winner. When an object dies, they are recovered back to life using a recovery center. Viewers of the series are given a choice on who to eliminate from the competition each episode. Some episodes allow viewers to vote for an eliminated or fan-made character to rejoin the game instead.
The first season, Battle for Dream Island (BFDI), included 20 debuting competitors and 1 fan-made competitor who joined midway through the season.[2][3] 18 of the total 21 competitors were eliminated and sent to the Tiny Loser Chamber (TLC), a metal box containing all of the eliminated contestants.[4] The 3 finalists are put into one final viewer vote to determine which of them will win Dream Island. One of the finalists, Leafy, grows jealous of another finalist, Firey, for not allowing her into the island once Firey wins. Leafy bribes the Announcer to give her the island. A series of events unfold which results in all recovery centers being destroyed, several competitors permanently dead, and Leafy being chased by most of the living competitors.[5]
The second season, Battle for Dream Island Again (BFDIA), takes place shortly after the first, with Leafy being chased. After an attempt to escape by choosing a forked path, the chasers use a "Leafy Detector" to pinpoint her location and catch up just as she is crossing Evil Canyon via a natural bridge. About to be caught, a map showing a portion of Goiky knocks Leafy off, giving her an opportunity to escape to Yoyleland by teleportation. An uncertain amount of time after this, all of the living competitors in the grassland of Goiky meet to see the viewer results of who is participating in season 2. Along with the competitors are all of the fan-made characters who were featured but never debuted in the first season. 12 returning competitors and 10 debuting competitors were chosen. The season featured a new voting system which allowed for viewers an option to vote for someone to get an extra prize each elimination ceremony.[6] The season only ran for 5 episodes, with the fifth being split into 4 parts and a video game.[7][8] All 5 eliminated competitors this season were sent to the Locker of Losers (LOL), where the characters who did not make it into BFDIA were sent. The season was cancelled due to the Huang twins needing to focus on college.[citation needed]
The third season, dnalsI maerD roF elttaB (IDFB), was released 3 years and one month after BFDIA 5e and canonically 3 years after the events of such. It only ran for one episode but is not canonically cancelled yet.[citation needed] It features all characters who were outside the LOL before season 2 ended, including Evil Leafy, Leafy, and Bubble. Woody was brought outside the LOL from an unknown cause. It also reveals that every character has resided in Yoyle City due to the only recovery center being glued to the ground there. Golf Ball and Tennis Ball manage to find a wall teleporter, and talk with some characters about using it to bring characters out from the LOL. Due to device limitations, only one character can come through a portal per month, and it was decided that a character was to be chosen through viewer vote.[9]
The fourth season, Battle for Battle for Dream Island (BFB), had its first episode premiere on November 3, 2017. It takes place an unknown amount of time after IDFB, but eventually every single person must have managed to make it out of the LOL.[10] The place the series takes place in changes after BFB 16.[11] Before BFB 16, it takes place relatively close to Yoyleland, but not in the grasslands of Goiky, where seasons 1 and the first 4 and 2 fifths episodes of season 2 took place. The trees are orange and Yoyle Mountain is seen in the background. After BFB 16, it takes place in a mountainous environment with a thin layer of topsoil, relatively close to the orange woodlands but separated by large valleys. The hosts are Four and X, two numeric organisms[12] of unknown origin. The prize is something different from the first two seasons, being a BFDI. At BFB 16, all but 14 competitors quit the show and instead compete in The Power of Two (TPOT), the fifth season, which has yet to have an episode released. Unlike the first season, this one has 10 unique teams, two of which form after the events of BFB 16.

While having an optimistic personality, Bubble is very fragile and pops often, causing her to need her own "Recovery Center" to reform after being popped. Bubble speaks in a unique accent, pronouncing many vowels like "oi". Bubble commonly exclaims "Yoy!" or "Yoylecake!" out of excitement, the latter revealed to be a type of cake from Yoyleland. Bubble is one of the original members of Pencil's alliance. In BFB, after making some mistakes, Bubble's position in Pencil's alliance is demoted, from "member" to "bember" to "bemb". Voiced by Michael Huang.

Enraged about this, Leafy buys Dream Island from the Announcer by using a box of paper slips to lie about him having a lot of money. When this happens, the entire island disappears, and only the ocean in the distance can be seen. Horrified about the entire competition being held for nothing at all, the rest of the contestants manage to expose Leafy's theft and destruction / disappearance of Dream Island forever. However, Firey manages to escape with Leafy using Snowball's hang glider, reconciling about rejecting Leafy, as the fade off into the distance as the most wanted criminals for stealing Dream Island. |

Production[edit]
The idea for Battle For Dream Island began somewhere in May 2008, when Cary Huang made a comic strip with anthropomorphic objects replacing "rock, paper, and scissors" with Water, Sponge, and Fire instead for his school project at the age of 8.[13] Later, the characters would return in an unpublished series of comics like Totally Firey Island and Total Firey Points.
In 2010, Cary decided that he would make a monthly animated series of his characters on the screen, with the use of Adobe Flash and the help of Michael Huang for their YouTube channel.
After production on the first season ended in 2012, the crew started on the second season, Battle for Dream Island Again on the same year, within a few recommended characters joining and most of the original cast returning. However, the show suffered a three-year hiatus due to the crew's suspension from their AdSense and monetization issues for unclear reasons, resulting in the second season's cancellation and the third season's production in 2016.
The third season titled, IDFB, no longer had the objects competing and instead have them adapt to their new lives in Yoyle City, where the Season 2 finale took place in, but due to the creators attending college, the season was put on hold and the series suffered a hiatus again.[14]
However, on November 3rd 2017, the hiatus has come to a close with Satomi Hinatsu joining the crew, and the release of a fourth season titled Battle for B.F.D.I, which brought back the tradition of challenges and competitions, but with the change of the art style and animation and many unanswered questions about how all characters old and new have returned and joined to the game.
Merchandise[edit]
In 2013, Jacknjellify and Spreadshirt made an agreement to sell BFDI t-shirts on their website.[15] Three years later, they set up a RedBubble account that sold more clothing, and also sold posters, notebooks, clocks and pillows based on BFDI.
2019 saw the release of a lot of new merchandise, such as a Firey plush sold on their own website that came with a foldable Foldy craft and a code that made your vote for the next plush count as 100 votes.[16][17]
Around the same time, popular children's bookseller Scholastic released the Battle for Dream Island: Official Character Guide, a book with facts and trivia about the series and its characters for its Scholastic Book Clubs, but can also be bought on the Scholastic website itself. There is also an animated promo for the book released on the Scholastic Instagram and YouTube channel that showed many BFDI characters fighting for the book.[18][19] Later that year in November, Jacknjellify made an agreement with Crowdmade, an online store that sold merchandise based on famous YouTubers. The store sells unique t-shirts and hoodies based on the series.[20] They also released Leafy plushes in July 2020 but they’re sold out right now
BFDIA 5b[edit]
BFDIA 5b is a 2D adventure platforming browser game created by Michael and Cary Huang that runs on Adobe Flash Player, announced in an update video on January 31, 2013[21] and released onto their website on February 11, 2013 as the second part of the fifth episode of Battle for Dream Island Again.[8][22]
The game centers around Book as she finds the rest of Team FreeSmart and a way to escape Evil Leafy, who ate Book and the FreeSmarters at the end of BFDIA 5a. As of March 3, 2013, it was announced that the game's development was put on hold in favor for production of BFDIA 5c[23], as only 53 levels are playable as of now. In response to Flash being shut down at the end of 2020, developer Cary Huang has thought about converting BFDIA 5b and other Flash games he created onto HTML5 and other systems.
Reception[edit]
Since the show has debuted, over 58 million views on episode 1a of Battle for Dream Island alone and very positive responses and popularity from viewers and fans of the show has been received by Jacknjellify.
In the summer of 2016, Fandom hosted the "4th Annual Battle of the Fantasy Foods", a competition between fictional foods, during when the third season IDFB, was being promoted at the time as BFDIA 6 by Jacknjellify[24][25]. Yoylecake, a cake that contains side effects that turns an object into metal in the BFDI series, was the winner of the competition against Pitt Cola from Gravity Falls, an animated series from Disney.[26][27]
