Diana Sergeevna Davis (Russian: Диана Сергеевна Дэвис, born 16 January 2003) is a Russian ice dancer. With her current partner, Gleb Smolkin, she has earned three medals on the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating circuit and qualified to the 2019-20 Junior Grand Prix Final.
Personal life
Davis was born on 16 January 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is the only child of renowned Russian singles skating coach and former competitive skater and ice dancer Eteri Tutberidze.
Career
Early years
Davis began learning how to skate in 2005 at the age of two. Through the end of the 2015-16 figure skating season she competed as a single skater coached by her mother, Eteri Tutberidze, at the Sambo-70 sports school. After taking a season off, Davis chose to transition to ice dance and began competing domestically with her first partner, Fedor Varlamov, during the 2017-18 figure skating season, coached by Svetlana Alexeeva and Elena Kustarova at Sports School No. 2 Moscow. Davis/Varlamov skated together for only a year, placing 13th at the 2018 Russian Junior Figure Skating Championships before parting ways, after which Davis teamed up with her current partner Gleb Smolkin.[1]
2018–19 season
Davis/Smolkin made their international junior debut on September 2018 at the 2018 JGP Czech Republic. The team placed third in both the rhythm dance and the free dance to capture the bronze medal overall behind Russian teammates Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva / Nikita Nazarov in first, and Georgian competitors Maria Kazakova / Georgy Reviya in second.[2] Though they did not receive another Junior Grand Prix assignment this season, Davis/Smolkin went on to win medals in the junior divisions of the Tallinn Trophy (2nd) and the Volvo Open Cup (3rd). Their season culminated in a 9th place finish at the 2019 Russian Junior Figure Skating Championships.
2019–20 season
In the summer before the start of the 2019-20 season, Davis/Smolkin relocated from Moscow to Novi, Michigan to train under Igor Shpilband and Pasquale Camerlengo. They began their season at the 2019 JGP United States where they won the silver medal behind their American training-mates Avonley Nguyen / Vadym Kolesnik and set new personal bests in both segments and overall.[3] They next competed at the 2019 JGP Russia where they again finished second, this time behind Russian teammates Elizaveta Shanaeva / Devid Naryzhnyy.[4] They set a new personal best in the rhythm dance at this event, and with their two silver medals qualified to the 2019-20 Junior Grand Prix Final.
At the 2019–20 Junior Grand Prix Final, held in December 2019 in Torino, Italy, Davis/Smolkin placed sixth in both the rhythm dance and the free dance to finish sixth overall. The team did not compete again until the new year when they attended the 2020 Russian Junior Figure Skating Championships in February of 2020. At junior nationals, Davis/Smolkin placed third in both the rhythm dance and the free dance to earn the bronze medal - their first podium finish at the event. Due to their placement, the team was named to the Russian contingent for the 2020 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Tallinn, Estonia along with teammates Elizaveta Shanaeva / Devid Naryzhnyy and Arina Ushakova / Maxim Nekrasov.
