First Contact is a 2019 science fiction novel by American writer James McLellan. The story is told largely from the perspective of alien life making first contact with the human race.
Setting[edit]
The first part of the story is told nearly exclusively from the perspective of an alien species, living at the Gutenberg Discontinuity a transition region in the Earth's lower mantle and the core. The precise biology ofthe aliens (called Lithics later in the novel) is not described, but they breathe a molten mixture of 20% lead, 78.2% iron, utiliize uranium decay for metabolic power, and resemble, when seen in a pressure suit on the surface, to resemble 3 meter tall giant sloths.
At pressures of 55.1 gigapascals, the force of buoyancy significantly overpowers the force of gravity. Lithic sense of up and down is completely reversed. Earth's core is preceived as up.
In optically opaque, dense, liquid metal, the species processes sound at two frequency bands : a lower frequency band for hearing, and a higher-frequency band for sight. Lithics, like surface dolphins, hear using their jaws. Although the species can hear, they do not possess the ability to speak. Instead, the species communicates with one another using sign language. Lithics also do not generate their own phonon "light" by means of any acoustic emission. Acoustic noise generated by the Earth's core is the principle source of natural occuring phonon "light".
