The ISPA - University Institute of Psychological, Social and Life Science (in Portuguese: ISPA - Instituto Universitário de Ciências Psicológicas, Sociais e da Vida) acronym for Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada (in English, Higher Institute of Applied Psychology) is a private Portuguese university institute, located in Alfama, Lisbon.[1]

History[edit]

Founded in 1962 as Instituto de Ciências Pedagógicas (in English: Institute of Pedagogical Sciences), it was transformed, in 1964, into Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada (in English, Higher Institute of Applied Psychology), having, in 2009, been converted into a University Institute.

On March 12, 1973, the Psychology course was recognized by the Ministry of Education as a higher education course.

In 1989 the course was recognized as a Bachelor's degree.[2]

Degree Programs[edit]

ISPA was the first Portuguese higher education institution to provide teaching in the field of Psychology in Portugal, continuing to be an essential milestone in the same area.[1]

Currently, teaches an integrated master's degree in Psychology, subdivided in a first phase leading to obtaining a Bachelor's degree (1st cycle) in Psychological Sciences and in a second phase leading to obtaining a Master's Degree (2nd cycle) in Psychology, in three areas of specialization: Educational Psychology, Social and Organizational Psychology and Clinical Psychology.

ISPA also offers Bachelor's degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Community Development and a degree in Basic Education, in partnership with ESEI - Maria Ulrich until the academic year 2019-2020.

Currently offers Master's Degrees in Marine Biology and Conservation, Pre-School Education, Pre-School Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, Community Psychology, Health Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social and Organizational Psychology, Educational Psychology, Psychology and Developmental Psychopathology and, in partnership with the Catholic University of Portugal, master's degrees in Neuropsychology and in Cognitive and Behavioral Neurosciences.

ISPA also offers PhDs in Behavioral Biology, Integrative Biology and Biomedicine in partnership with the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência and NOVA University Lisbon, Education in partnership with NOVA University Lisbon, Psychology, Social Psychology in partnership with ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon and the University of Lisbon and the International Doctoral Program in Neuroscience in partnership with the Champalimaud Foundation and the NOVA University Lisbon.[3]

ISPA also has an organic unit, ISPA - Formação Avançada (in English: ISPA - Advanced Training), whose mission is to organize training that does not lead to an academic degree, such as continuous training, postgraduate courses, advanced studies and e-learning.[4]

Investigation[edit]

The institution develops scientific research activities, both in the area of Psychology, as well as Biology and Education. Currently has Research and Development Units of the Foundation for Science and Technology as CIE - Research Center for Education, APPsyCI - Applied Psychology Research Center Capabilities & Inclusion, WJCR - William James Center for Research in partnership with the University of Aveiro, MARE - Center for Marine and Environmental Science in partnership with the University of Lisbon, University of Coimbra, University of the Azores, University of Évora, NOVA University Lisbon and the University of Madeira and IBB - Integrative Behavioral Biology Group an internal group of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência.[5]
