Jack Fenton[edit]

Character[edit]

Jack is a boisterious man who has been interested in the field of paranormal since college.[3] He obsessively builds and maintains dozens of functional Anti-ghost gadgets to hunt his foes, regardless if they're good or evil. Both him and his wife are callous towards ghosts and remain vindictive towards them.[4][5]

Jack is an adequate fighter with great strength and courage, but can often be clumsy, incompetent, and too brave for his own good. He often jumps into action, weapon in hand without thinking of the consequences to his actions.[6][7][8] It has caused some bit of embarrassment to his children.[7][9] However, he has a maturity and seriousness that few people recognize. Despite his constant obsession with ghosts, he loves his family and is able to competently fight to protect them.[10][7][11][12] Although a technological genius, he professed to getting solid "B"s in school.[13]

Jack is determined to prove the existence of ghosts (and later capture them when ghosts become public awareness)[6], but remains clueless that his son is one.[4][14] Though that has not stopped him from accepting him when it was revealed to him.[15][16]

Jack is a friendly individual and is oblivious that his best friend, Vlad wants to kill him. He constantly supports his friend and remains loyal to him.[3][17][18] He is also a talkative man who constantly rambles on his interests, enthusiastically teaching his children how to work the Fenton weapons.[10][19] He is frequently confident in himself and adorns his many inventions with his logo.[4][20][21] He is easily excited and often has a childish personality, lest of all believing in Santa Claus.[22]

Plot Overview[edit]

Prior to his college days, his past life is unknown, though he has claimed he was born in a log cabin where he was forced to eat horse meat because of the war.[4] He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he befriended Vlad Masters and eventually fell in love with his future wife, Maddie. It was there that the trio invented a portable ghost portal. When Jack accidentally poured diet soda into the machine, the portal broke and shot Vlad with Ecto-Acne, rendering him years in the hospital and damaging their friendship.[3][9]

Jack eventually married Maddie and moved to Amity Park to continue their research on anything Ectoplasmic, all the while building a family. There he remains a constant obstacle towards Danny's ghost half, usually either as his outright enemy or as a liabilty, with Danny stuck saving his life.[4][7][19][8]

When Jack and Maddie were both invited to Vlad's 20th college reunion party, the former saw it as a chance to patch their friendship. He was unaware that Vlad secretly planned to kill him and take back Maddie whom he believe Jack "stole". Jack was spared due to his son, a half ghost like Vlad himself.[3]

He and his wife were crucial during the ghostly invasion of Amity Park and continued to fight against Danny and other ghosts with vigor.[6][7][23]

He had an alternate self when Danny changed the past by saving Vlad from the Porto-Portal. With the Ecto missing him, it instead aimed on Jack, causing him to become Jack Plasmius and miss the opportunity to marry Maddie. He tried to be a superhero, but failed. He spent the rest of his life trying to find a cure for his ailment. With Danny's help, he managed to reunite and confess his love for Maddie. Danny eventually set the time period back to what it once was.[9]

Jack and Maddie learned their son's secret when Danny's secret identity was exposed accidentally in public. They were shocked and appalled that Danny never told them; his sister justified it as his constant fear that they would dissect or kill him. By end, the two easily accepted Danny's secret, but he quickly erased their memories despite the ease.[15]

In the series finale, Jack is finally confronted by Vlad whom reveals his true intentions and hatred towards the man. The two had volunteered to stop the asteroid aimed at Earth, but when Vlad fails to phase it out, Jack leaves him stranded, clear that his best friend was no longer the man he cared for. He then helped Danny Phantom with his plans to save the world. After succeeding, Danny is convinced by Jazz to reveal his secret once again to his parents, both of whom remained proud--Jack himself stating the two should be a team.[16]

He has an ancestor named John Fenton-Nightingale who lived during the time of the Salem Witch Trials during the late 1600s. They both share the same looks and obsessiveness (John towards witches).[24]

Madeline "Maddie" Fenton[edit]

Character[edit]

Maddie, short for Madeline[10] is the down-to-earth wife of Jack Fenton. Unlike her husband, Maddie is mature, a consistently competent fighter, more responsible, and usually grounded and supportive when her wayward husband isn't. She takes a more maternal role then Jack does with his parenting.[6][26][17] That hasn't stopped her from becoming just as obsessive whenever a ghost is mentioned.[27] Despite their vast differences, Maddie and Jack both love each other and the former often defends him and their actions.[4][28]

Maddie is an accomplished black belt martial artist as well as an expert marksman and technical whiz.[6][10] At times, she has to physically help or save her husband from his own clumsiness.[6][29]

Danny's mother is a firm believer in what can be strongly evidenced/"proven" scientifically and is more rational than her husband, preferring to dissect and study ghosts then outright destroying them.[14]

Though a calm and friendly woman, she can get aggressive when circumstances forces her to.[27][28][11][12] She also retains mixed feelings towards Vlad, uncomfortable with him since he revealed his love for her.[10][23][17]

She has a sister–Alicia–in Arkansas whom does not approve of Jack.[30]

Plot Overview[edit]

Like Jack and Vlad, Maddie attended the same college as they did. The triad were close friends with one another. She was unaware Vlad had fallen in love with her and instead married Jack sometime after the Ecto-Acne incident.[3] They moved to Amity Park to continue their research and start a family. She remains a constant obstacle towards Danny Phantom.[6][7]

She and Jack were crucial during the ghostly invasion of Amity Park and remained so throughout.[6][7][23]

She had an alternate self due to Danny's interference in the past. Instead of Vlad getting hit by the Portable Portal, Jack does, rendering him into Jack Plasmius. Vlad managed to save Maddie before the blast could hit her, causing her to fall for him. The two married, but it remains secretly loveless as Maddie has to constantly hide her ghostly experiments from her husband. Danny managed to lure Jack to Maddie where they reunite in bliss. She then helped Danny return to the Ghost Zone where he fixed the time period to its current present setting.[9]

She learned of her son's superhero secret when he accidentally revealed himself to the public. Though shocked and disappointed that he never told them in the first place, she and Jack easily accepted him. Danny in turn erased their memories despite their ease.[15]

She helps Sam Manson and her daughter against a triad of men-hating ghosts[12] and helped Danny Phantom with his plans to save the world from an asteroid. With encouragement from his sister, Danny reveals his secret identity to his parents. Maddie and Jack once again accepted him.[16]
