Joseph Robert Hawley (born September 23, 1982) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He is best known as the red-tied member of the indie rock band Tally Hall.[1]
Early life
Hawley was born in Detroit, Michigan, on September 23rd, 1982. His family later moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan and Hawley attended Hickory Grove Elementary School. In 1997, Hawley attended Lahser High School where he met drummer Ross Federman. In 2001, Joe attended the University of Michigan, where he studied filmmaking and would meet his future Tally Hall bandmates Rob Cantor, Andrew Horowitz, and Zubin Sedghi. Hawley graduated from the University of Michigan with honors in 2005. His senior thesis was a short film called "The Other Way".[2]
Career
Tally Hall
In fall of 2002, Hawley created a comedy troupe called anonyMous[3], which would feature influential people to Tally Hall's career later on. After videotaping a wedding with film school acquaintance Andrew Laurich, Laurich played a CD from his roommate Cantor's old band. Cantor introduced himself to Hawley and later invited him to practice with his new band (then known as "Gallagher" and later "540")[4]. Hawley was accepted into the band after making Cantor a small demo CD including covers of "Lady Madonna" by the Beatles and "Space Oddity" by David Bowie. After performing a handful of gigs together, Hawley proposed the name Tally Hall, named after a food court in Ann Arbor that the band members (with the exception of Andrew Horowitz) had grown up around. During his tenure in Tally Hall, he was known for writing songs with advanced vocabulary and odd subject matters. He played in the band until their hiatus in 2011.
Miracle Musical
Since Tally Hall's hiatus, Hawley has been the most active of the Tally Hall crew. Hawley spearheaded a project called "ミラクルミュージカル", which translates to Miracle Musical. The Miracle Musical group released an album called "Hawaii: Part II" on December 12th, 2012[5]. This album features former Tally Hall members Rob Cantor and Zubin Sedghi on vocals, Ross Federman on drums, and Bora Karaca as producer.
Miracle Musical later released other albums related to "Hawaii: Part II", including "Hawaii: Part II: Part ii", a behind the scenes and instrumentals collection[6], "Hawaii Partii", a collection of 8-bit versions of select "Hawaii: Part II" songs [7] that acted as the soundtrack to a videogame[8], and "Variations on a Cloud", which is the supposed "zeroth" track from "Hawaii: Part II"[9]. "Variations on a Cloud" is a song about the September 11 attacks, and Miracle Musical removes the song from streaming services every September 11th to give attention to the day. Miracle Musical also released a cover of the song "Candle on the Water" from the 1977 animated Disney film Pete's Dragon. Hawley announced that "Hawaii: Part II" may be getting a pressing on vinyl in mid to late 2022[10]
Joe Hawley Joe Hawley
In 2016, Hawley released a comedy hip-hop album called "Joe Hawley Joe Hawley", which was his first release outside of Tally Hall and Miracle Musical using his given name. The album was promoted with three commercials posted to his YouTube. The album consists of his usual intricate vocabulary, but adding more humor. Joe tried to get the album on streaming services, however the large amount of samples he used prevented him from putting it on sites like Spotify and Apple Music. The album was published to Bandcamp but was quickly taken down.
Hawley later released a reversed version of the album called "γɘlwɒH ɘoႱ γɘlwɒH ɘoႱ" on April 16th, 2019[11] to combat the copyright strikes, with the only unreversed track being "Aristotle's Denial"[12], as it did not have any uncleared samples. Joe later got all the samples cleared and released the forward version of "Joe Hawley Joe Hawley" on streaming services on November 11th, 2020[13], with only his remix of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" being removed. The 2020 release also reverses "Aristotle's Denial" to be consistent with "γɘlwɒH ɘoႱ γɘlwɒH ɘoႱ".
On March 13th 2022, "Joe Hawley Joe Hawley" was removed from streaming services, which has happened many times with "Variations on a Cloud" from the Miracle Musical project. When Hawley was initially asked what had happened, he simply stated that he did not know[14]. This removal was later speculated to be an April Fools joke, as the album was put back onto streaming services on April 1st, 2022.
Later Solo Releases
In 2017, Hawley released the song "Special" with guest rapping from Isaac Castor and background vocals from Marcy Nabors[15]. Marcy is credited as "Nabors" on the single, however they have no other releases under that name.
A year later, in 2018, Hawley released a cover of The Skyliners' song "Since I Don't Have You" with vocals from Coz Baldwin and Casey Shea[16]. Baldwin is a large member of the Tally Hall community and created a Tally Hall wiki called hiddeninthesand.com, which was named after the song "Hidden in the Sand" from Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum. Shea is a good friend of the band and covered for Hawley on tour.
On February 14th, 2019, Hawley released the song "Weird Bed &/or Yes Please" exclusively on Bandcamp[17], however the song would later be put onto other streaming services along with an instrumental version with reversed vocals called "Yes Please &/or Weird Bed". This song is about having sexual intercourse and has references to the film The NeverEnding Story.
In 2020, Hawley released a song called "Sleigh Ride Invincibility Star" onto streaming services[18]. The song is a cover of "Sleigh Ride" and interpolates the "Powerful Mario" theme from Super Mario 64. It was originally recorded for the Suburban Sprawl Music Holiday Sampler 2011[19], but Joe has since regained the rights to the song after the Suburban Sprawl Music Holiday Sampler's shutdown.
In 2021, Hawley debuted his instrumental cover of Elliott Smith's song "Everything Means Nothing to Me". The song was originally recorded in 2018 and was used as the background music to a video on his YouTube channel titled "I Am Not Joe Hawley"[20]. Joe later released a version with vocals by India Valladares Lovelace IV, but the song has since been removed from the internet.
Joe stated that his next album will likely be titled "Joe Hawley" and be more acoustic compared to "Joe Hawley Joe Hawley".
