John Michael Burton MBE.[1] DipArch RIBA IHBC AABC, is Surveyor Emeritus to the fabric of Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Abbey[2]

John[3] joined the architectural practice Purcell Miller Tritton, now trading as Purcell, in 1971 then a modest practice focus on conservation. John assisted Donovan Purcell, who was surveyor to the fabric of Ely Cathedral. Following Donovan's death in December 1973 John continued with his work on the great west tower guided by Professor Jacques Heyman until Peter Miller was appointed Surveyor. Soon after John was appointed to Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford as a quinquennial inspecting architect and to several other parish Churches in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. The fire in the chancel of All Saints Church Writtle in the Diocese of Chelmsford introduced John to more historic building work particular Churches in Essex and Suffolk.

John was elected as master to The Worshipful company of masons in 2013.
