Kijo Sensei began Buddhist practice in his teens in the late 1970s in the UK with various groups such as the FWBO, Throssel Hole Abbey (OBC) and the Thai Forest tradition at Amaravati Theravadin Monastery. Began training at the London Buddhist Society with the Zen group there, under Ven. Myokyoni in the Soko Morinaga Rinzai Zen lineage. After a couple of years of training with the Zen group, Kijo became a student of Genpo Sensei in the Maezumi/White Plum lineage in the early 1980's. Kijo was ordained as a monk in 1991 and taught meditation in Zen sitting groups, schools and briefly at a holistic center in London for those with substance abuse issues. Kijo also guest lectured at Heythrop College, London University and at the American University in London. In 2017 was ordained in the lineage of Soyu Matsuoka Roshi, by Shoji Roshi. Kijo was Transmitted as a full priest and Zen teacher by Shoji Roshi in early 2021. He is now the resident teacher at Smiling Buddha Zen Center.
