The Pink Mist, Butterfly-Blue Scabiosa or the Pin Cushion flower (Scabiosa comosa), commonly known as the Fluffy scabious or the Large scabious, is a purple-blue wildflower native from South Siberia to Mongolia and across north, east, and central China to Korea. Known in Mongolian as Ber Tsetseg is a perennial flowering plant belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. Native to parts of Europe, particularly in regions like the Mediterranean, it thrives in various habitats, including meadows and grasslands. This species of Scabiosa flowers for three months of the year across the steppes and forest steppes of northern Mongolia.

Morphology Leaves: The leaves of Scabiosa comosa are typically lobed or divided, with a serrated margin. They can grow up to 10 cm long and are primarily arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The foliage is usually a medium green colour and serves to support the plant's overall health and photosynthesis.

Flowers: One of the most attractive features of Scabiosa comosa is its distinctive flowers. The flower heads are spherical and consist of numerous small, tubular florets. These flowers are typically a beautiful shade of lavender to blue and bloom from late spring to early autumn. The individual flowers cluster together on long, slender stems that can reach heights of 60 to 90 cm.

Fruit: After flowering, Scabiosa comosa produces seed heads that are also quite decorative, featuring a rounded, spiky structure that can add interest to the garden even after the blooming period.

Habitat and Growth Conditions Scabiosa comosa prefers well-drained soil and can thrive in full sun to partial shade conditions. It is relatively tolerant of drought once established, making it a suitable choice for a variety of garden settings, including rock gardens, borders, and as part of wildflower meadows. The plant typically grows in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9.

Uses Ornamental: This plant is primarily grown for its ornamental qualities. The attractive flowers draw pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife gardens. It can be used in cottage gardens, perennial borders, or even in container arrangements for patios and balconies.

Medicinal: Historically, some species of the Scabiosa genus have been used in traditional medicine, although specific uses for Scabiosa comosa may not be well-documented. As with any plant considered for medicinal use, careful research and consultation with a qualified professional are recommended.

Maintenance Scabiosa comosa is relatively low-maintenance. It benefits from deadheading to promote continuous blooming and control self-seeding. Regular watering is important during dry periods, especially for young plants. Additionally, although generally pest-resistant, it’s advisable to monitor for common garden pests and diseases.

Propagation Propagation can be achieved through seeds or division. Seed can be sown in situ or started indoors and transplanted after the risk of frost has passed. Dividing established plants every few years helps to maintain their vigour and can create new plants for propagation.

In summary, Scabiosa comosa is a visually appealing perennial that adds colour and texture to gardens while providing ecological benefits. Its adaptability and ornamental qualities make it an excellent choice for a wide range of gardening applications.
