Poor Man's Poison
Poor Man's Poison (PMP) is an indy Americana, folk, bluegrass, rock band based out of Hanford California. The band consists of Ryan Hakker - Guitar, Mike Jacobs - Guitar, Tommy McCarthy - Mandolin, and Dustin Medeiros - Upright Bass, Banjo, Harmonica.
PMP started making music on a porch in the rural, central valley community of Hanford California. PMP debuted their first self-titled album Poor Man's Poison in 2009. The group achieved notoriety from this release with singles including “Devil’s Price” and “Greedy Man.” In 2011 PMP release Friends with the Enemy including “Georgia Lawman” and “Providence.” Following these two studio albums, PMP returned to their hometown roots and released Live at The Fox, a recording of a performance at historic Fox Theater in Hanford California. This recording was followed by Providence, released in 2014 singles including “Providence” “Redemption” and “The Gallows.”
The band took a break from music to focus on family and career in 2014. However, the Providence album exhibited increasing exposure on streaming sites (Pandora, Spotify) resulting in millions of streams worldwide monthly. Based on this experience, PMP went from “writing in the mentality of being a live band, to writing in the mentality of being in the studio (Hakker)”[1]. Band members realized that their success was coming from singles rather than complete albums.
In 2019, with some hesitation, PMP ended their hiatus and began recording again. That year they released “Hell’s Comin’ With Me,” followed by “Let Us All Down.” In 2020, the group released the single, “Feed the Machine”. This recording quickly gained traction addressing the COVID pandemic, and currently (2021), has over 8.5 million YouTube views. In 2021, the band released In The End, a five track, a 3 song, themed E.P. that included “Give And Take,” the second half of the Feed The Machine story.
In 2012 PMP performed for American troops at Guantanamo Bay (GTMO). Later that year, the band won the title of "Best New Country Act" and $100,000 at the Ryman in Nashville, TN. PMP competed against 58,000 other artist for the Texaco Country Showdown competition hosted by artist Jewel[1]. PMP has toured with artists such as Jerrod Niemann, Darius Rucker, Lee Rocker, Charlie Daniels Band, Jason Isbel, The Devil Makes Three, and many more. They have played the CMA Fan Fair in Nashville, Sundance Film Festival, MTV Music Award's private party, and much more.
Note: Done For Good is a different band that with most of the members of Poor Mans Poison (the prequel to PMP). In The End (Intro) features Dr. Villain. This effort was a side project of Ryan Hakker and Dustin Medeiros integrating more electronic elements into the music.
