Poor Mans Poison is a Californian band, from a town called Hanford. The group consists of four members, Tommy McCarthy, Ryan Hakker, Mike Jacobs, and Dustin Medeiros.[1] The band was formed in the summer of 2008, after a series of collaborations with other groups.

History

The group formed from the artists having several musical collaborations with rock bands such as 'Done for Good', which was published in 2006. They also collaborated with many other artists before the group officially formed.

Before the group had officially formed, they collaborated with other groups and artists to make rock music, such as their 2006 collaboration with Done For Good.

The band recorded their first independent album in 2009, called Poor Mans Poison. Later on, they went on to say that when they first started in 2009, they were unsure about what type of music they would make. This consisted of their first songs after forming the group, such as Devils Price and Forget My Name. Two years later, in 2011, they released their second album, Friends with the Enemy.

In 2012, they won $100,000 at the Texaco Country Showdown in Nashville, Tennessee, at the historic Ryman Theatre[2]. They beat 'thousands of other performers'. Past winners have included Martina McBride, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, and Neal McCoy.[3][4], and won the 'Best New Act in Music' award, [5] where afterwards they went to perform in front of a crowd of 'hundreds of thousands' at the CMA Fan Fest. The band claimed that they never thought that they would win, but their manager 'pushed them to'[6]. Their prize was presented to them by the recording artist Jewel. After winning this prize, band member Tommy McCarthy stated "The ultimate goal of the band is to financially support our families and live the American Dream, and be your own boss."[7]

Soon after, they decided to put the recordings of some of their songs performed live into an album named Live at the Fox in 2012 – consisting of 16 songs, such as The Gallows, Jump That Train and Crown Vic Headlights. This album was recorded live at the Hanford Fox, where they sold out the venue.[8][9] They later played again at this venue, where they managed to sell it out in 12 days, which they were the first group from the area to accomplish[4]. The group became guests at the Texaco County Showdown in 2013, after winning the previous year’s competition. They sang some of the songs they had published since then, or songs they didn't sing the last time. While they were there, they got interviewed by KHTS Radio, where they stated that since their victory, they have had a lot of travelling – such as in tours. They also mentioned them going to Cuba, to sing 'Call for Soldiers', to the military, to show their appreciation. They also honored the song to all military in their performance of it at the Hanford Fox. In this same interview, they said their inspiration for their music was day-to-day life, and that they were 'normal guys'.

The band has also gone on tour with many artists, including Jerrod Niemann, Darius Rucker, Lee Rocker, Charlie Daniels Band, Jason Isbel, The Devil Makes Three, and many more. [citation needed]

Three years after Live at the Fox, in 2014, they released their second album, by the name of Providence, consisting of 12 songs – such as Providence and Fathers Lament. Soon after this album, they went on a break from their music careers, to do things such as start their own family or explore different career paths.[1]

The band returned in 2019, to make a single by the name of Hells Coming With Me. They later made a single in 2020, called Let Us All Down. In the height of the COVID pandemic, they made a song called Feed the Machine, which got over 10 million YouTube views, and 10 million Spotify streams, and is about events at that time. Due to the success of it, they made a 'part 2' to it, in their 2021 EP In The End, consisting of 6 tracks: In The End, Good People, Give and Take, Stronger then the Whiskey, The Struggle and This is the end. Give and Take was the part 2 of Feed The Machine, this time focusing on the riots and the uprising at that time. Later on in 2021, they released another single 'Everyday is exactly the same'.

Their YouTube Channel currently has over 76000 subscribers, with almost 50 million views, gaining roughly 3 million on a monthly basis.[10] Some of their most popular songs currently include Feed The Machine, Providence and Hells Comin' With Me.

Since their return in 2019, they have made 2 music videos – for Hells Comin' With Me and Give and Take. In 2020, they achieved #20 on Angola's Apple Music Charts[11], with their song 'Feed The Machine'. The highest they have charted is #5 on Ukraine's iTunes Charts, on the week of 3rd October 2021, with their song 'Hell's Coming with Me'. [12] They have also been on iTunes and Apple Music charts in countries like Israel, Poland, Denmark, Greece and Romania.
