Spilona, North Carolina
Spilona, North Carolina is an unincorporated community in the northern part of Elevation Township. It lies between Smithfield, Four Oaks, and Clayton in southeastern Johnston County, and runs along NC-210 Highway.
The settlement was founded in the middle of the 19th century. The community included a church, schoolhouse, postmaster, and a farm-supply store which in 1886 was said to be doing the best business of any general store in Johnston County.[1]e Robert J. Lassiter was the first and only rural postmaster for the area. The postmasters for some communities in Johnston County were discontinued in 1903. Most of the roads in the area weren't paved until the 1960's, with the exception of Lassiter, Lassiter Pond, Raleigh, Reedy Creek, and King Mill roads.
In the early days of the settlement, the locals used to grow crops such as tobacco, and corn and ship the exports up the Neuse River to Smithfield, the county seat and a notable trading post. The items would either be sold in markets, or sent up the Neuse River to Norfolk, Virginia. Most of the inhabitants were subsistence farmers and grew just enough to feed their families.
Today, the area is rapidly growing with new subdivisions and new inhabitants. The new inhabitants moved from other areas in Johnston County in the 1940's and 1950's. The real estate market is is doing well in the bustling community, as many are moving from urban areas of North Carolina such as Raleigh, and Charlotte for the peace and tranquility of the backcountry and small town life.
