T Barny (born August 8, 1956) is an American artist living and working in Healdsburg, California. T Barny works primarily in stone, but also creates bronzes from his carved stone works. T Barny has been creating sculpture professionally for over 40 years and is known for his abstract sculptures using a Möbius edge. T Barny has produced over 1000 sculptures that range in size from one-foot-tall tabletop pieces to twelve-foot-tall corporate and public installations [1] that can weigh upwards of 9 tons. He has carved 211 different kinds of rock from 53 countries. His sculptures are collected in 23 countries on five continents.

As a young child, T Barny loved to make sandcastles on the beach. People never recognized his castles as castles because they were really his first abstract sculptures.

Education

Choate Rosemary Hall, 1975

Rhode Island School of Design, 1980

Career

T Barny has spent his life in a love affair with stone. He studied art, sculpture, and design at Choate, Denison, Stanford, and Brown, receiving his BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he also ran the Foundry.

T Barny imports personally selected stone from quarries around the world, carving his pieces from massive blocks of granite, alabaster, calcite, and his favorite, marble.

The natural forms and geometric shapes used in mathematical models are regularly reflected in T Barny’s work.

He has worked as an artist-in-residence in such locations as Greece and Italy, as well as several locations throughout the U.S., though the majority of his work is done from his home studio in Healdsburg, California. It is his great love of stone as a medium that allows him to create serene and evocative works that continue to grow in their market presence and are becoming increasingly sought after in both private and public arenas. His work has been shown in over 100 galleries worldwide and he has participated in more than 600 individual and group exhibitions.

T Barny taught at the Mendocino Art Center in California and The Carving Studio in Rutland, Vermont. T Barny has also been honored to be an “Artist in Residence” in Carrara, Italy – Tinos, Greece – Woodstock, New York and Texas.
