We're Not Really Strangers (game)
We’re Not Really Strangers is a relationship building game meant to foster deeper connections between individuals, whether they be strangers, friends, or something more. The game was created by model, artist, and photographer Koreen Odiney [1]. Her inspiration for this game came from her experiences as a photographer and prompting good conversation to make her clients more comfortable during their sessions. With the money she had earned from her successful modeling career, Koreen launched her brand and the game in November of 2018, with its signature red box and simple yet effective lettering and design [2]. The game grew considerably in popularity in 2020 during the extended period of isolation people experienced due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Koreen explained in an interview that the biggest inspiration for creating this card game came from a chance encounter with a stranger as she was going to her modeling job. The man she approached, who was reading poetry, struck up a conversation with her about her work, and gave her the idea to write a book with the game’s name [1]. Koreen’s main intention with the creation of this game was to push people and encourage them to make meaningful connections, and the sheer amount of people who have connected with this game and with others through this game shows that she has accomplished this goal [3].
Gameplay
The game is ideally played by two players but can be played by up to six. After the final card is set aside, starting on level one, perception, the players go back and forth asking each other the questions on the cards until 15 cards have been played, and then the players move onto the next level. Level one, perception, allows players to see how others perceive them and reflect on the assumptions they make about others as well [3]. Level two, connection, puts forward the questions that are rarely asked and forces the players to connect on a deeper level [3]. Level three, reflection, allows players time to reflect on their gameplay and ask the questions that they’ve been wondering about [3]. After players have made it through the three levels of gameplay, it is time for the final card. The final card tells players to write each other a handwritten note, fold the notes, exchange, and only open them once all the players have parted. Also included in the game are two “Dig Deeper” cards that are given to each player when playing with two people, and can be used by each person once per level. These cards are meant to encourage your partner to share more if you feel they are holding something back.
