Acellus Academy is an accredited online K-12 education program created in 2013 by the International Academy of Science, a nonprofit organization. While based in Kansas City, Missouri, the learning service has provided education for one million students in every state in the United States.[1] It is accessible from its website or from its mobile app available for both iOS and Android.

Acellus Academy is a distance education school that serves students both nationally and internationally. The online school states that they are the school for students "looking for an alternative to traditional school settings for a variety of reasons such as a medical necessity, interest in more rigorous coursework, safety from bullying issues, a more flexible learning environment, and independent studies for students who have dropped out of school and need a second chance for success".

History[edit]

Acellus Academy is owned by the International Academy of Science, a non-profit organization.

Acellus Academy was established in 2013 as a private tuition-based K-12 school. The private online school uses the Acellus Learning System, developed by the school. The system focuses on the implementation of science and mathematics.

Since becoming established in 2001, the Acellus Interactive Learning System has expanded to include over 250 courses, including all required core subjects for K-12 students. Acellus Interactive Learning Systems combines instruction from accredited teachers with technology that enhances learning by tailoring the course content to each students' learning needs.

Acellus Academy is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Acellus Academy is accredited with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)[2], an accrediting organization recognized by the Missouri Department of Education.[3]

Content[edit]

The private online academy offers over 250 courses for all students K-12. These courses include core subjects, electives, Advanced Placement (AP), Career and Technical Education (CTE) and STEM focused pathways.

Each course includes a video lecture taught by the teacher and practice problems to reinforce the concepts of the lessons as well as exams. The lessons comes prerecorded so the students can move through the lessons at their own pace.

The academy uses a tiered form of instruction to guide students through lessons. Each lesson provides more than one video, used to expand upon certain concepts.

Parents may choose up to 6 courses at a time from numerous courses. Students are able to learn at their own pace under the supervision and assistance of their parent.

Special Lessons are provided within each course to provide students with hands-on projects and activities. The assignments offered for supplemental instruction include writing assignments, research projects, and hands-on experiments.

Acellus Academy utilizes grants and funding to hire accredited teachers to help develop the courses. According to the academy, the funding has also been used to cover most of the costs associated with creating and maintaining the courses.[4]

Acellus also provides an interactive interface for parents to track the progress of their children.

The school offers students two different graduation plans. The standard pathway offers the students minimum credit requirements for graduation set by the state of Missouri. Standard pathways are recommended for students that plan to attend a community college or enter the work force after high school. A more rigorous program is offered for students that plan to apply for competitive four-year colleges.

Acellus Academy uses a system called Prism Diagnostics, which splits students into groups based on on similar deficiencies in their background knowledge. The system is used to monitor when a student shows a deficiencies in one of these spectrums, the system calls on the Customized Personal Instruction for that deficit to fill in the gap of the student's knowledge. The interface used by the school offers students individualized approaches and a "one-on-one" concept of instruction.

Acellus Special Education courses are designed for students with disabilities, and incorporate tools needed to assess, adapt, and individualize course material. The classes are broken into small concepts with each concept being taught via video instruction. After the instructional video, the student is given an assessment designed to determine the student's mastery of the concept. Once mastered, the student may move on to the next lesson. If the content is not mastered, then another video will be recommended automatically, targeting the deficiency in the students' understanding.

Acellus Interactive Learning System[edit]

The Acellus Interactive Learning System has been used by more than 2,600 schools across the United States. The system was founded by Roger Billings, most known for pioneering the use of hydrogen as fuel, particularly in vehicles.

Acellus Interactive Learning Systems are used as credit recovery programs for students who have fallen behind on course work or dropped a grade level. St. Louis Public Schools uses the Acellus Interactive Learning System for drop-out prevention. Schools may also use the interactive learning system for special education, Advanced Placement, English as a second language, and GED courses.

The Acellus Interactive Learning System was created by the International Association of Science. It also offers master's and doctorate degrees in research by combining science, engineering, and business into one course of study.

The Acellus STEM courseware acts as a catalyst for Acellus CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs. The system also uses the STEM Robotics Labs and STEM curriculum for their special needs learners. The Acellus STEM-10 is a ten-year program in coding that starts in 3rd grade. It adds complexity each year until they graduate high school.

Acellus offers schools a wide selection of CollegeBoard Approved Advanced Placement corses, which allow students to earn college credits while still attending high school. The courses are taught by certified AP Instructors. The Acellus AP courses are audited and approved by the CollegeBoard, so that students are eligible for college credit.

Acellus also offers CTE-100 courses to prepare students for careers in 100 CTE fields. Students are able to take courses specific to the career pathway of their choice. The curricula of the courses follow state CTE guidelines as well as meets industry standards with the idea that students will be qualified, upon completion, to take industry-recognized certification exam.

Acellus also provides schools and adult learning centers with extensive resources to make the ideal academic and career training programs. Courses in each core area are specifically developed for each section of the GED, as well as the HiSet and TASC.

Tuition[edit]

Acellus Academy offers students three different forms of tuition. The Full Tuition plan is available to all students and may be paid annually or in monthly installments. For the school year, August through May, it costs $249 per month.[5] June through July, the tuition is $149 per month. For the entire year, the tuition is $2,400.

The Roger Billings Mentoring Program helps students prepare for a career path after high school by providing tuition scholarships and mentoring guidance. For the school year, August through May, it is $79 per month. During the summer months of June through July, the cost to attend the school is $49 per month. For twelve months, the cost of tuition is $699 per year.

Acellus Academy also allows students to apply for state-funded scholarships to qualifying students.
