Ameriflight flight 7141 was a chartered cargo flight from New Orleans Lakefront Airport in Louisiana to Waukesha County Airport in Wisconsin. The Metroliner lost control in on the approach and crashed into a golf course, everyone on board survived. The flight was carrying 3 people and 56 dogs.[1] [2] [3] [4]

Aircraft[edit]

The Aircraft Involved was a 37 year old Fairchild SA227-AT Expediter built in 1985. The aircraft was originally delivered to DHL Aviation, the plane was later sold to Ameriflight and was operated by both Ameriflight and Aeronaves, with Ameriflight being the last operator of the plane.[5]

Crew and other Occupants[edit]

The flight was carrying 2 crew members, 1 passenger, and up to 56 rescue dogs.[6] The crew members consisted of the pilot and copilot, the sole passenger was a worker from the Humane Animal Welfare Society accompanying the crew members. The flight was transporting up to 56 at-risk dogs to Waukesha to be put in shelters across Wisconsin and up for adoption.[6]

Flight[edit]

The Metroliner departed Lakefront Airport earlier that morning. At around 9 a.m. local time the flight was conducting an ILS approach to Runway 10 at Waukesha County Airport. The control tower cleared Flight 7141 to land, that was the last communication with the plane. The visibility was low at only 800 meters due to snowfall.

After the final communication Flight 7141 intercepted the localizer and the glideslope. At the same time the pilots noticed the command bars on the flight director indicated the plane was in a climbing right turn. The pilots disconnected the autopilot to continue the approach manually. Once the autopilot disconnected, the aircraft rolled hard to the right and nosedived. The pilots quickly increased engine power and tried to regain control of the plane.

The pilots were able to level out the plane, however they didn't have enough altitude and the Metroliner crashed into a golf course, the plane skidded along the course crashing into trees which sheared off the wings, despite the violent impact, the plane came to a stop with the fuselage intact. Despite 300 US gallons (1,100 l) of fuel being spilled after the wings were sheared off, there was no fire or explosion.[1]

Aftermath[edit]

Workers at the gold course quickly rushed to the crash site to provide any assistance, some workers said they arrived to find dogs running around outside the plane. They quickly got all everyone and all of the dogs out of the wreckage and to safety. Rescue workers and Animal workers quickly rushed to aid the survivors. The 2 crew members received minor injuries, the sole passenger was unharmed and an unknown amount of dogs received bumps and scrapes. Other than that, no one was seriously injured.

The dogs were treated and all of the dogs were put up for adoption later that day, all however were listed as being afraid to fly due to the accident. None of the remaining occupants required treatment.[7] [8] [9]

Investigation[edit]

The FAA and NTSB Immediately launched an Investigation into the accident that is currently ongoing, the Preliminary report was released on December 23rd that same year.[1]

No potential causes at this time has been put forward.
