Andrew Stone is an American college baseball coach and former player, who is currently an assistant baseball coach for the Michigan State Spartans. He played college baseball at Western Michigan for head coach Billy Gernon from 2015 to 2019.[1] He then served as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for Kalamazoo College baseball team until 2021.

Early years[edit]

Stone was raised in Portage, Michigan, and attended high school at Portage Northern High School, where he played basketball and baseball. In his high school baseball career, Stone was a member of back-to-back district championship teams and a conference championship. His senior year, he was named to the Big 16 All West Division Team and was ranked No. 241 in the state of Michigan after batting .336 with a .457 on-base percentage.[1]

Playing career[edit]

Stone played college baseball at Division I Western Michigan from 2015 to 2019, where he earned his bachelor's degree in sports management in 2018, and his master's degree from WMU, also in sports management in 2019.[2]

In 2015, he redshirted his first season for the Broncos. Stone finished out his career with a .304 batting avg. and .402 on-base percentage in 434 collegiate at bats.[1] As a player, Stone won a MAC Tournament title and appeared in a NCAA Regional in 2016.[2] He was a three-time Academic All-MAC selection and a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete.[2]

Coaching Career[edit]

Stone began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Kalamazoo College.[3] As a coach, he focused on offense and infielders, as well as being the recruiting coordinator. During his two seasons at Kalamazoo, Stone helped the Hornets to their second-highest win total in school history with 25 wins in 2021. Stone also helped the Kalamazoo offense to five school records in 2021, for runs (313), RBI (267), doubles (84), triples (20), home runs (23), while posting No. 2 marks in school history for hits (409) and batting average (.327).[2]

On August 23, 2021, Jake Boss Jr. announced that Andrew Stone has joined the Spartan staff as the volunteer assistant coach.[4][5][6] In his two years at MSU, Stone has helped the coaching staff lead the Spartans to a 57-52 record in the last two seasons. In 2023, the Spartans finished the season with 33 wins and a Big Ten Tournament Appearance, the first 30+ win season since 2016.[7][8] Stone worked with three Spartans that ended up in getting drafted in 2023 Major League Draft (Mitch Jebb[9], Brock Vradenburg[10], and Bryan Broecker[11]) and one that singed a non-drafted free agent contract (Trent Farquhar[12]). Following the 2023 season, Coach Stone was brought on as a full time assistant coach, after the NCAA approved legislation that added another full-time, paid assistant coach on staff.[13][14]
