Antonio Rangel (born 1969) is an American neuroeconomist and the Bing Professor of Neuroscience, Behavioral Biology, and Economics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). His research focuses on the computational and neurobiological basis of decision making.

Background[edit]

Rangel received a B.S in Economics from Caltech in 1993, a M.S. in Economics from Harvard University in 1996, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard in 1998. Rangel was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Stanford University before moving to Caltech in 2006.[1][2]

Research[edit]

Rangel's research seeks to understand the algorithms that the brain uses to make different types of decisions, and to identify how the brain implements and constrains these computations.

The Rangel Neuroeconomics Lab at Caltech uses a combination of tools from neuroscience, economics, psychology, and computer science, including fMRI, EEG, TMS, single-unit recording, eye tracking, and computational modeling.

He spoke at TEDxCaltech on January 18, 2013.[3]

Awards and recognitions[edit]

Rangel was awarded a NOMIS Distinguished Scientist and Scholar Award in 2019.[2]

In 2018, he was named a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science.[1]

Rangel served as the President of the Society for Neuroeconomics from 2009 to 2010.[4]

He is also the recipient of a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation.[1]
