Arcaea (Xār̒kheīy) (is a rhythm video game developed and published by Lowiro (stylized as lowiro).[1] The game was released on iOS and Android mobile platforms on 9 March 2017.[2]

A single-player version of the game was released for the Nintendo Switch on 18 May 2021.[3]

The selling point is its gameplay has a combination of floating notes and ground notes coming toward the player in a corridor perspective. Most of the songs are related to the story of the game and produced by the publisher.

Two young girls with lost memories in a shattered world of sound. They must find and collect multitudes of floating broken glass called “Arcaea” to restore their memories.[4]

In 2022, Arcaea has reached over 8 million downloads on every platform and more than 300 songs are available to play.[5]

Story[edit]

The game includes main and side stories that can be accessed in story mode. The story’s concept is about two girls who came to the world of memories without even knowing their self-identity. They both had to deal with whatever this world offered whether happiness or emptiness.

The last chapter of the main story was released on July 31, 2022. It was published with version 4.0 update with the name “Silent Answer” as an epilogue episode. This means the story of the two main characters is at the end of the line.[6]

Eternal Core

Introducing the worldbuilding and two main characters of the game, a world of glass that shows memories from different worlds. Hikari found that she woke up in this world surrounded by glass that shows happy memories and she is pleased just hanging around watching those memories. Tairitsu’s first impression was adversity. Those glasses, called Arcaea, show nightmares that grow her intention of destroying all those bad memories as she thought it was the only way to make this world more peaceful.[7]

Vicious Labyrinth

Tairitsu kept collecting bad memories as much as she could find. She found a labyrinth that contained corrupted energy. She went in and demolished it until she encountered the memory that made her realize that what she had done was meaningless. As her belief was destroyed, she lost all of her emotion and hope. All she wanted now was to see someone, not to share this pain but to hurt.[8]

Luminous Sky

Hikari had been admiring these beautiful memories for an unknown duration. Arcaea was repetitively showing these lovely memories to the point that she felt nothing about them. She lost all of her intention to do anything, she only felt emptiness. Until she found the red glass that shows a memory of herself who was once blissful when she came to this world for the first time. She came to her senses and set her goal of understanding this world, the world of Arcaea.[9]

Adverse Prelude

Both Hikari and Tairitsu met each other for the first time and had a conversation about what they had been through during being in Arcaea. They figured that they had no memory of their past self, only thing they had in mind was that this world was named Arcaea. Tairitsu revealed that she was in pain and unhappy, she wanted to transfer this pain to someone else. Hikari sympathized and consoled her with sincerity. However, what she did resulted in Tairitsu feeling undervalued and getting furious. Even Hikari managed to calm her down and gave her some hope but the glass then showed Tairitsu an unpleasant vision. That made her realize that no matter how she tried, it was meaningless, a good ending did not exist. She told herself that Hikari couldn’t be trusted, then released her rage and started to attack her.

Black Fate

Tairitsu began attacking Hikari, they were fighting with a glass in their hand and those that were orbiting around them. Hikari did not have the intention to harm another, therefore she only defended herself. During the fight, Tairitsu saw many visions in the glasses around her and those enlightened her about the truth of this place. Then she had the ability to control the glasses and get the upper hand. Hikari couldn’t resist this power and got stabbed by numerous glasses. She begged this place to help her while her breath was slowing down.

Final Verdict

The world of Arcaea answered Hikari’s pray. She got a sword that was able to counterattack Tairitsu and cornered her. They continued the battle and eventually, Tairitsu got impaled in her belly. After Tairitsu’s death, Hikari came to her senses and regretted what she had done.[10]

Silent Answer

This chapter has two different endings.

  • One Last Dream

Hikari gave Tairitsu a second chance to live, She resurrected by filling the empty body with a real memory of Tairitsu that the Arcaea had collected. But, returning the life causes this world to scatter. Tairitsu returned without memory of the terrible thing she did. They both held hands and started to walk together. No more glasses orbiting around them and this world was slowly fading.[11]

  • A Perfect Wish

The world of Arcaea restored itself from the damage of the battle. Hikari continues to live her life alone as a ‘God’ of this world she created with a guilt woven in her heart. She locks herself alone with depression as the world starts to freeze and cold along with her emotions.[12]
